PMC Speakers: Pro Audio vs. Home Audio
« on: 21 Mar 2009, 05:10 pm »
Is it true that the Pro audio PMC speakers are voiced differently than the home audio PMCs? I heard that the Pros are designed for higher volumes whereas the Home audio PMCs are better for hearing detail at low SPLs and are a more relaxed presentation. Can anyone shed some light?

Thanks, James

Hi James

Good question, I think the only difference is the finish and maybe cabinet construction? As far as i can tell both versions use the same drivers and probably the same crossovers. It was mentioned by an insider that the pro studios out there listen to them at lowish volume, but that its the consumers who push them to the limits.

I have the OB1's at the moment, and i can testify that they go very loud for there size and remain in control (in my small space) and that the cabinets do not rattle, so not sure how they could be better for what they are in all honesty, they sound good at both high and low volume.

I guess you have to ask yourself a question - would YOU make them to tighter tolerances if they was being received by a High-end sound studio?

All PMC loudspeakers are voiced to their respective reference within an extremely low tolerance, all is done in the same fashion - pro or home models alike, big and small.  All of our models are capable of high spl while maintaining coherence and detail... Obviously though, the bigger you go the noticeably higher SPL capabilities.

Thats good to know. Thanks for clearing that up because I have a fondness for speakers that are superbly articulate at even low SPL.
