ripping music from dvds?
« on: 21 Mar 2009, 04:58 pm »
I finally found my problem with ripping cd's, it was the drive in my mac. I bought a LaCie desktop dvd and use that with my powerbook and I-tunes, works great no flaws or digital pops etc.! Thanks to all for the earlier help with this!

now my question is can I rip the music off of music dvd's to use with squeeze center? for instance I have the concert for Bangladesh on dvd...

thanks,
Lou

Do you mean DVD-Audio discs or DVD-Video discs? Both have copy protection, but the DVD-Video encryption format has been broken, so there's software that will allow you to extract the audio and video streams. There are several programs available, many of them commercial. Here's some old info that might still work: http://www.glump.net/howto/audio_only_dvd_ripping_guide. Unfortunately the audio on DVD-Video is most likely going to be encoded in AC3 or DTS formats, which are lossy (like MP3) and will need to be recoded to a format that is compatible with SqueezeCenter (e.g. MP3 or FLAC).

DVD-Audio is another story. It uses a different copy protection scheme, but it has also been broken. There are tools to rip DVD-Audio but they are less common. The music data on DVD-A is stored uncompressed or with lossless compression.

Keep in mind that since both DVD-Video and DVD-Audio are copy protected, ripping the audio (in the US) is a violation of the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act). CD Audio is not copy protected, so ripping audio CDs doesn't have the same legal issues.
