Bryston Phono

"Hi James,

I keep seeing all these reviews on the BCD1, the amps, and even the Torus stuff, but why in Gods name is no one gushing over the BP1.5? It's awesome: dead silent, organic, and without the splashy highs that are so common place.

A little pricey? Meh. Have you seen what $25,000.00 get's you? No, the BP1.5 does without the fancy stuff and gets you into your records without first sucking you dry.

Anyway, just thought I'd sing your praises.

James"

Yes, it is neutral and a typical Bryston with huge soundstage.
I had it in combination with Rega P5 and Exact cartridge.
Bryston is so much in digital domain these days and analogue stuff is a bit aside.
How is it selling?

Actually I'd like to hear from anyone who had upgraded from a BP25P or similar to the BP1.5< I've been neglecting the BCD-1  for a little while I reacquaint  myself with my vinyl collection.

The Bryston phono stage is awesome! Very low noise and very neutral. The only drawback is it will allow you to see your recordings for what the really are. However, it manages to be musical with even garbage recordings. I'm enjoying it right now!

Exactly vegasdave!
20+ years old records sounded to me horrible, just as bad as they were recorded.
I complained to my dealer and the next day he came to me with a stack of audiophile LP´s and suddenly everything was perfect!
BP1.5 is very revealing and merciless but honest!
I didn´t hear it yet playing with some Hi-end MC cartridge though.
Vegasdave, what´s your TT?

Hi Robert,

It's my understanding that the phono sections internal to the BP 25 and 26 are similar to the stanalone BP 1.5.  I would think this would be especially true if you're MM now and would only be using the MM section of the BP1.5.  Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong as I too would like to understand this before I decide which way to go.

Regards,

Bill

James,

What is the U.S retail price of the BP 1.5 and the power supply?

$1400 for the MPS-2 and $2550 for the BP1.5

Hi Audi1,

If you're interested in MM only you would do better to buy a brand new BP26P/MPS2 @$4,395.00.  For $345.00 you get a new BP26 in that scenario.

Hi James,

How much more gain is there with the BP1.5 MM stage over the BP25P/BP26P? I'm using a high output MC 2.5v, so volume is anywhere between a 11 and 3 o'clock.
I've looked over the manuals and a few reviews but most of the reference is in regard to the MC stage.

Thanks

Robert

Hi Robert,

The gain is the same in the BP1.5 as the BP25/26. The phono stages are identical.  We can increase the gain in the MM stage by 6dB on a special order.

So are all of the phono stages identical in every preamp?

Hi James

I recall you saying that although the phono gain can be increased to 6 dB, this increase does come with a price and the quality of the sound is not as good as if there was no additional gain. I have the phono card in my Bryston B100 SST and have also observed that the volume pot has to be cranked up much higher than if I was using a CD source.

Best Regards
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Correct-there is always a battle with gain vs noise.
