New (to me) Super 8 Alnicos are here!
« on: 19 Mar 2009, 01:49 pm »

These finally arrived from down under to Hong Kong!  Purchased from stevenkelby (a pleasure to deal with), who delivered them to me in pristine condition.  Will run with a Leben CS300 or Almarro A205AmkII and various DAC and CD sources.  Need to figure out how to set this up optimally, as I have a 2 yr old in the household.

I know I can search the forum here, but a quick lazy question, what is the theory behind the nerf balls in and out of the port?  If one needs to place closer to backwall, should you plug the port or not?  thanks

btw: now that I have these, anyone interested in my Super 5s?

In general, moving them out from the back wall improves soundstage and imaging. For best imaging, they should be moved out 4-6 feet (or more) if your room allows. [Post dimentions for your room in the Accoustics Circle here on AudioCircle, and they can give you suggestions for optimum placement. Make sure they know Omega Single Driver Monitors have accoustical properties that in some ways are similar to planer speakers, like Magnapan or electrostats.]

Skyland stands linked from the Omega site are also a worthwhile investment to optimize resolution and imaging. [About / Links]

Center of driver should be approx ear level. In general you want the drivers NOT directly facing your listening position. Rather you want them tilted out, so they cross paths behind your listening position. For my 6" Alnico Monitors, I see the inside wood edges of both speakers.

You will need to experiment with plugging the port. Unplugged will produce more low end response. Plugged will likely make the speaker a little faster and tighter.

Congratulations and enjoy! Kent

thanks Kent, these are 'keepers' for me, so I'll take my time to optimize the set up.  your suggestions are very helpful.

I made these simple speaker stands for my Omega Bipoles out of MDF. The front of the stand serves as a "beard" that improves bass output. The bases are loaded with 100+ lbs. of sand for excellent damping. :) They are spiked to the floor.

Nice speakers  aa

I fooled around with an Almarro 205a Mk1 on my ferrite Superhemps. Nice midrange but didnt have quite enough low end punch and control for me on those speakers. My sister has that Almarro now and its a very good match with her Super 5 XRS. The Mk2 has better transformers though so that could make a big difference.

Have fun :)

Hi Jim!

Glad you finally got them and are happy! I'm sure you'll love them, I have the sellers remorse already, no good speakers here at the moment. :)

With subs, I left the Nerf balls in all the time and was considering sealing them complete. When I didn't have the subs, I took the balls out to give a bit more bass energy. Play around with them. Maybe balls in for bass heavy music or music with no bass anyway, where you don't want more bass and really want mid clarity, and balls out for music that needs help in the bass or when you want to rock out. They can do pretty good deep bass either way but the flavor changes with balls in or out.

I had them only about a foot away from the wall for most of the time but pulled them out about 4-5 ft for special occasions. Slight toe in as Kent suggests, and I was careful to get the drivers centers at ear level which helped a lot with clarity of the upper mids/treble.

I love the idea of Roy's sand filled bases too.  :thumb:

Happy listening!

Thanks again, Steve!  Good luck in your new speaker efforts.

and thanks for rajacat for idea, when I get some time, perhaps I could put together a sand-filled stand/base for these.

Hi JimP,

Welcome to the forum and you have a fantastic setup. I have the same amp as you do. It's a terrific combo. The posts from Kent and Steve are right on.

Nice stands Rajacat. The front panel really helps out with the bass. Lots of mass too.

Thanks,
Louis
