Question about resistors for passive pre
« on: 18 Mar 2009, 08:56 pm »
In a shunt-to-ground passive volume control, what type of resistor is appropriate...one rated at a quarter watt, half watt, five watt, etc.?  I'm curious not so much about its ohm value because I'd like to do some experimenting on that front, but rather on that wattage figure...I don't want to use something that might damage any of the other components in the chain. Or doesn't the wattage rating matter so much? I'm using a CD source and a flea-powered SET amp, FWIW.

Also, wire wound or metal film? I'm looking at Rat Shack's website for easy-to-get options in the 1k to 2.2k realm, but recommendations for better options and online vendors would be appreciated.

Thx.

1/4 or 1/2 watt is fine, there is almost no power flowing through there. With a 2V signal and a 50K resistor there will be .04mW so even a 1/4 way more than enough in terms of current. More important (IMO) to get something quiet, non inductive and non magnetic.
