Unison Unico hummm?
« on: 10 Dec 2003, 05:37 pm »
I read here on A/C that some/all Unico integrated amps hum. Could someone expound on this? The Unico has been near the top of my list for a system I want to build.
Thanks.

It did not hum for me.
It's a very, very nice, sweet sounding integrated with plenty of muscle.

Alas, mine hums--and it's starting to drive me a bit crazy, which is why I have mine for sale at A'gon (mine's the one with phono listed at $1190, but I'm certainly open to offers).

A couple of things: aside from the hum, which varies in volume from barely noticeable to noticeable from a couple of feet away (with no rhyme or reason as to when or why), the Unico is a great sounding unit, even with the stock tubes. That's why I'm so frustrated by this.  In a perfect world, I'd keep it and save up for the upgrades, which are supposed to be excellent.

By the way, when I inquired, the manufacturer said that the hum is "normal" and is caused by differences between the power grids here and in Italy, and particularly by the power coming into my home. Interestingly, my Unico does NOT hum over at my friend's house (he lives around a mile away), so I guess it is something here in the house.

Feel free to PM me with any other questions or if you're interested in discussing a sale.
Thanks,

Jon

You've probably got DC on the lines.  E-cores tend to handle this much better.  If possible, complain to your utility company and have them check it out.  I have a vested interested in seeing how responsive the power company is.
