possible bad tube?
« on: 12 Mar 2009, 08:31 pm »
I just received a Sovtek 5Y3 destined for my Clarinet.  The whole glass and internals are tilted off to one side, like the Leaning Tower of Pizza.  I have no way of testing it, short of plugging it in, and I don't want the thing blowing up on startup or something. Is this cause to worry?  Should I send it back or give it a try? I am just starting the build, so nowhere near ready for it.

It's probably okay, but I'd send it back if it's not aesthetically pleasing :D

Probably safe to give it a try - just stand well back when switching on.  I once had a valve i'd dropped bul looked intact, but must have had a small crack in it.  Gave a lovely purple flash when I powered it up -impressive, but scary.

Is it loose in the base?

The tube is solid in the base.  Strikes me as poor quality comtrol 'tho, even if it does work.
