Questions about free panels??
« on: 9 Mar 2009, 09:20 pm »
Hello I got some free panels from a guy at church that are left over from the drum room install.
They appear to be rigid fiberglass panels 2x4 feet and 5/8 inch thick. They have a flat black paper on one side that looks like it has been painted. They appear to have been white at one time and look like the paper has pin holes in it. My guess is they are an acoustic ceiling tiles.
My question is are these as good as buying 703 or something simular? Will they function ok with paper backing left on and would they need to be doubled or tripled? Can the paper face forward?
I did play around with them a little in my family room with decent results. They will used later in a man cave.
Thanks for input.

Nick77,

I have never seen OC or J-M rigid fiberglass less than 1", but if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck then it's a duck.

Okay, seriously, the panels will work better in double thickness and best at triple or quadruple without the paper backing.  Use a sprayed on adhesive to bond the panels together.  The thicker they are the better they are at the lower frequencies.

Tear off the paper then glue them together to make a panel of double the thickness. Cover them with fabric and use at your first angles of reflection.
