I don't think the ART system is meant to displace, replace or otherwise make redundant the room treatments that we're used to, i.e. bass traps, panels, etc. The system I heard them in was one that had other room issues that had to be dealt with--some of these had been somewhat cured with tube traps, panels and even a pretty expensive active system to even out bass issues caused by a standing wave. This was work that happened over 2 or 3 years, so by the time I heard the ART, I'd seen this system evolve quite gradually over that time. The ART stuff brought about a positive change that I would peg as equal to or greater than all the other treatments in the room combined. Even so, none of the other treatments are coming out. And they probably never will.
The ART worked great in that system, but again, if the ART came first I'm sure that the other treatments would eventually have to follow. This isn't some kind of magic bullet cure-all for every type of room acoustic issue. Fairly priced? I don't even know how to evaluate that. Unlike other people, I have no skills or tools to actually fabricate anything similar to this stuff. And having been up close and handled it, I think there's a bit more to their construction than meets the eye. The "bell" part of the Gravitron or whatever it's called is made of an unusual material that is NOT obviously metallic. I thought upon first inspection that it was some kind of ceramic. The antenna-like protrusion at the top of the "bell" is actually a series of spherical magnets, and quite powerful ones too. They attach magnetically to the "bell", so that's got to have some metal in it. Oh, and I call it a bell because apart from looking like one, if you flick it with your finger, it rings like one.
As someone has mentioned before, $3000 is not an unreasonable price to pay for upgrading a component. For the money, I think those of you who can afford it AND whose rooms DO respond to it, are getting an upgrade that's system-wide. And that seems pretty fair to me. So yeah, if it was $800 I'd be all over it.
