Seeking Synergy of AVA amp and preamp
« on: 7 Mar 2009, 01:40 am »
I have a T8 and I might be suffering from a lack of synergy with my wyred4sound class D amp.  I'd be interested in trying an affordable experiment with another AVA amp to match my T8.  I have ET LFT8 planar speakers and they lots of power as in watts, but not current.  I'd like over 200 watts.   SS, or a hybrid.  So if anyone knows of any used AVA amps on the market that would be a good candidate let me know via PM or a post.  If I find an AVA amp that syncs up with the T8 in ways not possible with the Wyred, for equal or less money, that would be just fantastic.

Thanks boys!

This amp should play very nicely with your T8. The seller is open to dropping this off at Frank's for any upgrades you may want, also.

Definitely worth considering.

Have fun with what you choose,
Jerry

I'd also call Frank from time to time; he seems to have quick turnover of used gear--faster than what they can post on the website.

Yes, this amp appears to be a good option.  The seller is local to Frank, thereby saving you any shipping to Frank, who, if you wanted, would inspect the amp for a small fee or upgrade the amp to the Ultra 550 for 699.00.  That would be a substantial savings over a NIB Ultra 550, but you would have the exact same amp without the newer faceplate (but with the warranty, I believe).

An Ultra for $1700 is a bargain.

I was looking up your speakers. Appear to be much bang for the buck.  :thumb:

Before the Salks, my Ultra 550/T8 drove Carver ALS Platinums.

You should also keep your eyes open for used Insight or OmegaStar amps. The T8 would probably sweeten up the sound for you, and the AVA SS amps are powerful, rugged, and neutral.

Even the 240 or 170 might surprise you with the amount of power they put out. You may not really need 200+ W/ch. if you buy an AVA amp. :)

I tend to suspect that an Insight amp is what most people should buy. Then they can choose between a T8, Ultra, or Insight preamp to set the overall flavor of their system.

I hear that Pink Triangle is back in business!

Hope this helps.

(FWIW, I've never thought class D amps were a particularly good audio engineering development, and I would imagine they sound absolutely dreadful with ribbons.  I am happy with my 350 and ribbons/planars, so I would imagine the larger Ultra would be good for you.  I find Frank's hybrids to be somewhat refined, so if you're mainly going to listen to rock, etc. a larger insight might be better.)

It seems to me that Frank recently observed that the Insight series is very similar to the Ultra equipment, with the Ultra stuff having a slight romantic coloration.

I find that the Insight equipment does just fine with classical music, opera, jazz, blues, folk music, and even rock.

What do you mean by "romantic coloration"? Are you talking distortion or actually higher resolution like vinyl in comparison to CD's?

Uhhhmmmm....  You used a lot of very gay code words in your original post, so I just assumed.  Really, there's nothing to be ashamed about.

Here's the quote BTW:

"I still like the Ultra Double 550 better.  However the Insight would be maintaince free (no tubes).  Both are very close sounding, the Ultra has that tiny bit of tube romance in the middle of the mid range, but the Insight has no solid state sound at all.  I am not sure I would pick them out consistantly in a double blind test."

FWIW: Then you haven't heard the Nuforce Reference 9 V2 Special Edition monoblocks http://www.nuforce.com/Product-Mono-Amplifier.htm When I auditioned these amps with fellow tube nut we were astounded with the tube like presentation these "car amp" look-alikes produced.  :thumb:

Needless to say I still love tube amps but digital amps done right can have some real magic to them.
