This looks like an original Dyna Pas-3 redone from our free 1982 do it yourself plans on the original Dyna boards with an amazing assortment of parts that do not fit the boards and were never suggested by us. All those microphonic capacitors will probably provide a "concert hall" sound that would be the envy of Bose. Geeze.

Frank, is the shielding for the transformer useful at all, I don't supposed you suggested it? Also, did you design a solid state power supply for this, since the rectifier tube is missing?

The shield looks like copper. That won't help with magnetic fields. You need a mu-metal shield for that.

Correct, a copper shield won't help much.

No, we never designed out the tube rectifier. It is very necessary in this case because of the very high voltage transformer. 660V AC across the rectifier tube.

Not a very well done project in my opinion.

No, I was thinking they should be blue.

For $100 I would buy a PAS with yellow caps, but for $400 I want one with blue caps because they sound so much better.

You haven't heard toob gear unless you've heard it with blue caps.

I've often wondered when Frank is going to wise up and go fully blue.

Well geeze, I do use four big blue caps on each Ultimate 70 rebuild. That must be the reason the sound so good.

Or - - - could it just possibly their electrical VALUE and how they are integrated into the circuit taking all the pole points needed into consideration.

I painted all the parts inside my Insight preamp blue and I'm just waiting for it all to dry. I chose a light blue, so I should be reaching audio nirvana soon.

I wonder if those toobs in the U70 would sound better painted blue?

I hope you didn't just go down to the hardware store and buy some latex paint. That will give it a "rubbery" sound. You need to score some NOS Sherwin-Williams oil based paint with the "cover the earth" logo embossed on the bottom of the paint can. It may be pricey, but you get what you pay for.

True Story: One day I was in the hardware department of Wal-Mart looking for some tool or something and another customer asked the salesman "What is the most expensive paint you have?" I had a hard time keeping my mouth shut.

It was Benjamin Moore alkyd. Is that ok?
