SqueezeCenter Continues After Shutdown
« on: 6 Mar 2009, 02:33 am »
Guys,

When I shutdown my laptop and SqueezeCenter is playing Pandora, the songs continue to play.  How is this happening? I would think that it would stop as soon as the "connection" is closed. Teach me something new!

Seems like a clear case of demonic possession.  I'd be worried.

You mean your SqueezeBox continues to play the Pandora songs?  I think it accesses Pandora directly, not through SqueezeCenter.

Like BradJudy suggested I believe that is the Squeeze Network function which allows you to stream network content directly through the SB.

I have the same experience when playing internet radio! The internet radio will continue playing for about 15 to 30 mins before shutting down. This is on SqueezeCenter and not SqueezeNetwork!

When the Squeezebox plays either an internet radio station or music service like Pandora, the connection is directly between the Squeezebox and the station or service.  The term used by SqueezeCenter is "Direct Streaming".  The SqueezeCenter server (or SqueezeNetwork) only works as a means of initiating and controlling the connection.  It normally doesn't proxy the stream.  When you shut down the server the connection remains.

There's an option under Settings > Player > [playername] > Audio > MP3 Streaming Method that can change this behavior for MP3 based streams.  You can change the method from Direct Streaming to Proxied Streaming.  I've never used it, but I would guess that it shuts down the stream when the server is shut down.  My understanding is that WMA streams can also be proxied if you disable the native WMA streaming under Settings > Advanced > File Types > Windows Media.
