Has anyone used the S1 as a bookshelf monitor?  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have the S1's they simply do not have enough output to be used as a bookshelf.

Thanks for the reply.

If I were to connect them to an icon would they have enough output?

When pairing S-1 with W-1, it will outperform any desktop speaker on the market  :thumb:
But it is meant to be used as a personal system for near field listening (6 feet away).  Ideal for people who spend a lot of time working on their desk or in a reading room.

Actually using the Icon system to watch movie on the desktop offer a level of realism (due to the details and sound stage) that is hard to match.

I'm using the S1's with the Nuforce Icon as speakers with my TV. Initially I was doing this to test them out (and burn them in) but the sound is fantastic and I have kept them in this configuration. Unless you've got a bloody big room, these speakers are fine as bookshelf speakers.

My Room is fairly big (approx. 14'X26').  I was given an icon and am looking for a set of bookshelf speakers to pair with it.  Any recommendations?

Thanks!!

I should have added that I've been looking at the old Dynaco A25s, though I'm not sure if they work ok when placed on their sides (which I would have to do).

I have the icon and the S1 as I said they simply do not have the output, they are excellent for nearfield work though and I highly recommend them for that.

I think you'd thrash the S-1's tiny drivers into oblivion if you tried to use them to play anything more than background-level music. Even with the W-1. When you try to push the S-1 too hard, their cones begin throbbing, and distortion increases because there's no lowpass filtering and the voice coil begins to leave the gap.

The S-1 are superb speakers, but they're best kept to the desktop. Look for an efficient multi-way bookshelf design for filling a larger room, or some efficient single-driver speakers like the Tekton Design speakers.

By the way, did you know this forum had a marquee feature? I didn't notice that until just now. </ADHD>

Icon Mobile + earphones or headphones = Personal Audio
Icon + S-1 + W-1 =  Desktop Audio
Icon Amp-30 + Icon DAC-1 + S-2 (or any other bookshelf speakers out there) = Family Room Audio   :thumb:

Here are the guys I'd pair with the Icon, if I were putting together a system from scratch:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Tekton-Design-Fostex-Full-Range-4-5-WB-speakers_W0QQitemZ250406380277QQcmdZViewItemQQptZSpeakers_Subwoofers?hash=item250406380277&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

These are similar to a lot of the big-box Omega speakers using the Fostex drivers, and the large enclosure helps the lightweight Fostex drivers produce satisfying bass without having to enlist a subwoofer (unless you really want to shake the room or get punched in the gut).
