Do any mid-fi receivers ($500-800) include a decent phono stage?

Hi eds.

Some questions:

> do you want a receiver (w/ radio tuner) or an integrated amp (pre and amp)?

> what is your target for power (watts per channel @ 8ohms)?

Are you talking about current production or vintage? For the former, the Outlaw receiver is pretty decent. Not a very long list after that. In terms of vintage I always liked the phono stages in the better Yamaha receivers.

Wind Chaser

Advent Model 300 - modest power and hard to come by.

Sorry guys.  I'm cool with vintage or new.  It's for an office system for my little brother.  He is a music lover with a lot of vinyl but he is not really an audiophile.  He has managed to cobble together a nice little home rig centered around used Rega gear.  At low volumes it's really nice.  But for the office he wants on-board phono and FM stereo and AM although AM is not critical.  But space is uber-limited.

if your cool with vintage equipment then look for a used Accuphase intergrated amp. The only real drawback with them is that they don't like 4 Ohm and lower loads all that well.

I'll second the Outlaw receiver RR-2150. I own one and it is a power house.

The Onkyo A-9555 has everything you're looking for. It has had a number of positive reviews.

I will third the Outlaw.  Haven't heard its phono section but the receiver is very powerful, well made and cool looking.  I've got a Pioneer (the one Chairguy has) and it sounds great, but I don't know about the phono section.  It's simple to operate and has an XM tuner.

Look no further than the Pioneer Elite SX-A9-J.  It's a true gift to the penny pinching audiophile today :thumb:

Dual mono right back to the toriods,'direct' listening (turns off display and tone controls for best sonics, and a very good MM and good MC section (loaded to 100 ohms).  The cost is $750(!) or so.  It's not a powerhouse at 55 watts/8 ohms and the tuner is merely a throw in, but it has pre-amp out jacks to use more powerful amps should you need it.

It is my full-time preamp/tuner (it has remote, too) and I bypass the internal amps to use 50 watt tube monoblocks to drive matters.

The aforementioned Advent 300 is good but doesn't compare as I find dual mono essential for really high quality vinyl listening.  Mine has been modded by Sound of the Wood (and cost a bit over $1000.00 with all the mods...including unique dial-a-resistive load from 0 to 100K ohms) and has a glorious line stage and FM section....but, it cannot replicate what the Pioneer does on vinyl with one power supply per 2 channels.

As well, it suffers from RF problems in the vinyl section and it's only 15 watts (and the amp stage isn't terribly well sorted to driving instable loads).

Your brother-in-law should be thrilled with the Pioneer...it's pretty slim at 28 lbs and has an attractive fascia and neutral color scheme, too.

Enjoy, John
