Kona Typica, City+ Roast
« on: 25 Feb 2009, 03:23 am »
This weekend I roasted several batches from my new 2lb bag of Hawaii Kona XF -Kowali Farm Typica beans.

The roasts were mostly Full City or even a little past, because I was roasting With my Fresh Roast on top of a hot cooktop on an oven. Wow it roasted much faster than I was ready for so I roasted past where I wanted to stop.

The coffee did not knock me off my feet compared to the last Kona I had a couple of years ago. Every Kona is different so I am not shocked, just a little disapointed.

Tonight I roasted to City+, actually a little before. The gounds are a lighter brown, almost a red as is typical of a lighter roast. The flavor is definitely different from the previous roasts. I like it, but I'm not sure yet if its more of the 'Kona' flavor I was anticipating.

Anyone else roasted Kona?

Also, I learned that Kona came to Hawaii from Guatamala in the 1920's. I haven't met a Guatamala that I don't like!

Guatemala was my favorite for sure. Kona seemed to like a dark roast, if I remember correctly.

Either way, enjoy.

I think Kona is a lighter roast. I love kona for it's flavor, so smooth. But it's a little out of my price range for everyday use. But what I did find was one of our local food marts has a Kona blend, whole bean, 2 lbs for 10.99. 2 LBS! it's unheard of in the Bayarea. It's all I buy now.
