Help with mac
« on: 23 Feb 2009, 11:45 pm »
My i Mac had gone bonkers and I can not figure out what to do with it. The desktop has become magnified and the mouse moves the entire screen around not just the cursor. I thought the mouse had gone haywire b ut a new mouse shows no change. I have had this problem before and unplugging the mouse (wireless) the USB transmitter anyway would fix it, but now it does not. A look through system did not show any obvoious solutions. Any help would be appreciate although I realize this is not audio related, but I know some of you are Mac experts.

Then it can go totally bonkers and the left click become like a right click and I can barely do anything short of shutting down. God, how I hate computers.

That's fun isn't it?

It is actually useful but I am sure you want out.

Easiest thing to do is turn off Zoom mode in Universal Access.

Go to OS System Preferences > Universal Access > Zoom Click "Off"

Alternatively, if you want to use the Zoom function
hold down keys: both Option + Apple  and then press the "-" minus key a few times until you get back to normal screen size. The "=" key is the zoom.  NOTE: use the -/= on the main keyboard not the number pad.

Cheers,
Ed

And if that doesn't work try holding down the Control key and spin the wheel / nipple on your mouse towards you.

Thanks , guys. It went back to normal (after all afternoon in the crazy mode) by itself, then came back again while I was reading your messages, which begs the question, am I doing something to make it go bonkers. As far as I can tell, it does it all by itself. The control button and spin of the wheel button worked but I think I'll go into preferences and turn off "zoom" permanently and hope that eliminates the seemingly random nutty and maddening episodes.

Yep, turning it off permanently is the best solution. Only reason I leave it on is for zooming in on web comps during development.

I turned off the zoom, but a couple of times when I scrolled it briefly wanted to zoom instead of scrolling and that left click turned into a right click again, also. I got it back to normal with the control back scroll method. Maybe I'll have to live with this happening from time to time. Maybe an old fashioned Mac mouse with no scroll and no right click option would permanently solve this problem. Any further thoughts? Thanks again.

hmm, are you on Leopard or Tiger?  I am on tiger. and don't use the new apple mouse. I've been using 3 button mice (non apple) for years now-never  had the random zooming issue you are having. sounds like some mouse macros are being erroneously initiated.

It's Leopard. It's been fine the last fifteen minutes or so, but I keep holding my breath. Very glad to have solutions that work. I knew I could depend on the guys here. The Mac forums seem to be useless.

It will kick in when I want to scroll. It magnifies and then all hell breaks loose. At other times, I have wondered if I accidentally right clicked to make stuff happen. I have no clue what's caused it.

If you hold down the Ctrl key and left click (or click on on single button mouse, trackpad) that simulates a right-click!
