Help with Infinity Driver Info
« on: 18 Feb 2009, 03:31 pm »
A buddy of mine has a pair of Infinity Reference Five speakers that he bought in the late 80's.  They are a 3 way unit with an EMIT tweeter, the woofer is 10".  He is having the surrounds on the woofers replaced and since they played after the surrounds disentigrated the coils need to be replaced as well. That is where the problem starts, the information on the web is very limited on the speakers.  Does anyone happen to know the specs on the woofer itself.  Apparently the person working on the drivers tried a 4 ohm coil and it didn't appear to fit.  We were able to determine the nominal impedance for the speaker itself is 6 ohms nominal, my guess is that it is an 8 ohm driver but it would be nice to know for certain.

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

I forget his name at the moment, but there is a guy outside of Philadelphia who specializes in Infinity speakers and is a virtual encyclopedia of knowledge about them.  He should be realatively easy to find with google.  He rebuilds speakers and drivers and will surely know what you have and will probably have the parts too.

Thanks for the response Jim.  I did come across a website dedicated to Infinity speakers.  The name of the site was "Bobby Shreds", here is the link:

http://www.bobbyshred.com/infinity.html

I don't know if this is the gentleman you are referring to or not, regardless, the site mentions that the gentleman, Bobby Shreds, passed away recently.

If this isn't the site you are referring to and you recall the name I would appreciate letting me know.

Thanks again,
Ed

There are a few guys that hang out on Audiokarma.org who are pretty knowledgable about Infinity too.

Ed,

Try this guy:

Millersound
1422 Taylor Rd
Lansdale, PA 19446
(215) 412-7700

I'm sure they have a web site but I don't know what it is.

This is the guy one of my friend back east took his infinitys to and who brought them back to life and improved them substantially in the process.

Thanks Bryan.  I read a number of post from Audiokarma that came up during some of my google searches.  If Jim's recommendation can't help me out I will try posting on Audiokarma next.

Ed
