Hi Jim,

Can you walk/run with these things in?  I tried a pair of in-ears before and they warbled quite a bit when I walked with them.

Eric,

With the expanding foam inserts (as opposed to the silicone ones) these stay in place very well and don't move around.  I am unable to run so I don't know how that would work, but walking around with them was no problem, though there is always some noise conducted by the wires.  That said, the wiring on these is very fine and flexible and generally doesn't conduct as much noise as typical headphones/IEMs.

I've used them most on plane flights as they do an excellent job of isolating external noises.

Hope this answers your questions, but as I'm blind, it is not a real good idea for me to be walking/running around without being able to hear the outside world :D.

I own a pair of a slighly lower end version from etymotic and I would not recommend them for running. Walking maybe, but even with the foam inserts and a snug fit if i'm walking i hear the sound of wind rushing and it's very distracting.

There are pretty much the perfect headphones for commuting though.

I own these and love them.  While I have run in them, I've got to say I haven't used them a whole lot for exercise.

Primary use for air travel and mowing the grass.  Love the fact that they basically double as earplugs.  I'm not a fan of noise cancelling headphones because your ears experience sound pressure all the time.

I think if I was looking for an exercise earphone, I'd go for some sort of sport model that firmly attaches to the head.  For me, I've found the "isolating" feature to be annoying and potentially unsafe while running, i.e. won't hear a car coming up behind you, etc.

But for air travelers I highly recommend these.

I love mine.  Have had them for years.  i agree that they are so isolating that sometimes you'd find their use dangerous (running, driving!!).  I use them for:
* recumbent exercise bike
* walking
* lawn mowing
* airplane travel (would be No.1 but I've traveled less lately)
* in bed late night listening (no sound leakage whatsoever)

Thanks folks for chiming in.  I wouldn't want somebody to get something they weren't happy with, and as I have no real experience of trying to use these while engaged in sporting activities I really couldn't speak to that with any authority.

They are very sweet to listen to.

I'll pile in here as well - and say that I've had my Etymotics 6 years now and they are my most prized toy.  Great sound and the other benefit is they protect your hearing by allowing you to listen at lower volumes - due to the suppression of outside noise.

Good luck with the sale.

Hi:

I have stayed away from these types of "In Ear" phones because I have small(narrow) ear canals.  Whenever I have tried to use ear plugs or any type of my kids cheaper ear phones they just fall out.  Do these come with different size tips?

Thanks,

rklein

rklein,

Yes, and in fact I have narrow ear canals too.  I can't even fit those little earbuds in my ears.  They have a few sizes of rubber tips (some are included with the package I'm selling), but I always preferred the foam tips.  These you would roll between your fingers to squash them down, then position the earphone in the ear and the foam would expand again and provide a perfect fit.

You can also buy replacement tips directly from Etymotic, and if that isn't enough, you can have custom earmolds made and these fitted in them for the ultimate fit.

Bump.

Please don't make me put these on agon.

I just inventoried the included tips and there are 3 pair of the compliant foam tips and 1 pair of the soft silicone/rubber tips -- 1 pair less of each than is included with the kit as I only used one of each kind.  All original replacement filters and filter replacement tool, 1/4" to 3.5mm adaptor, soft pouch, and shirt clip are all here and accounted for, as is the plastic storage box for everything to store in nicely.

Someone buy these!!    :o At $100, OMG!!    :o These are the best in-ear phones you may ever own.  If I could talk myself into justifying why I need TWO pairs I'd buy them.

I am interested which brings me to a pair of questions.  I would like to use these for the gym so could you please tell me how long the wire leading to the ear pieces is?

Also, would these ear monitors work well with a Ipod Nano?  I will upgrade my Ipod when traveling picks up (if it ever does).

Hi,

Cable length is 5 feet from earpieces to 3.5mm plug, however I don't think these will work very well with a Nano.  Perhaps others can chime in, but I think the Nano is pretty low power and these are not a easy to drive earbud.  Mileage may vary but I don't have a Nano here to test with.  I've always used mine with a mixing board, a headamp such as a Total Bithead, etc.

The length from the connector to the Y is 44 inches, from the Y to the phone is a little under 14 inches.
I use/used them with an Ipod Nano, Creative Zen, Sandisk Clip - works fantastic.
There are two versions: ER4P and ER4S, both work fine but have slightly different frequency responses, and sensitivities.

Thanks Philistine -- again, as I've never tested them on an iPod type device, I didn't want to mislead.
