My very own first dig at Bose...

Bose Press Release

I think its good that they have made light and efficient speakers for the Chevy volt, but they are kind of touting themselves as gods. I feel like Chevy could have gone to a lot of other people to get lighter, and more efficient parts that could have sounded better, all for the same cost. But its all about brand recognition.

Edit: Also, can someone explain high motor force...I really have no clue what they are talking about here. Speaker efficiency?

They imply efficiency, but who knows :dunno:

I would define it as hype.

If one had a high motor force speaker that would mean that the spider/voice-coil/frame assembly was strong and designed to be fast (and probably high excursion).

In turn this would mean that it was heavy or possibly made from exotic material. I doubt it is either in this case.

I imagine they're referring to BL.

It's really just hype in this case because it doesn't convey any useful information to the consumer. It doesn't really tell you anything about the overall performance of the speaker system.

There is some info here that talks about BL: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=116057

In particular, "BL is simply the amount of force on the cone you get for a certain current through the voice coil."

It's also defined in the Wikipedia entry on Thiele-Small. "Bl - The product of magnet field strength in the voice coil gap and the length of wire in the magnetic field, in tesla-metres (T·m)."

Think about it from Checy's point of view. Boston Acoustics, Thiel, Mordant Short, etc. brand speakers would verly likely sound better, but they mean nothing to the average consumer. Bose is a big, recognizable name that most purchasers equate with quality and good sound. It's all part of the sale, and you need to give people what they want, and perceived value for the $$$.

Plus, I'm sure there's more profit in doing it this way, as well as a joint marketing venture with a company that can afford to put the dollars into the marketing campaign.

The enhanced 'efficiency' is likely nothing more than the use of switching amps (Class D, perhaps?) they'll use for the system.

I would think due to EMI contamination that these amps tend to leak out...the Chevy Volt will be plagued with a host of electrical issues under it's pretty bonnet

We'll see.....
