Hard to say, but the sound I hear from "Sahib Shihab and the Danish Radio Jazz Group" CD I just picked up is superb. Perhaps the best I have? And the music is great as well.  :thumb:

In general, the ECM label ( a European label) stuff on vinyl sounds really good (I have a lot of them...and a lot of Keith Jarret albums).  The vinyl on Windham Hill is also pretty uniformly good.

I'm talking about the record itself (no warps, relatively quiet, clean mastering, etc)...the musical content is an individual thing, of course.

Keith Jarrett is a bit of a (known) rarity as he is an internationally famous musician AND audiophile...so his recordings are really clean in general.  He used to endorse a brand of speakers (cannot remember) and wrote the forward to The Complete Guide to High-End Audio by Robert Harley, even.

John

John - I just received my copy of Keith Jarrett's "The Koln Concert." You are correct, this is one outstanding recording. You can really hear the strings and reverberation. Thanks for the recommendation.

LP: Flight Path-SPHERE on Elektra Musician 60313-1 a 1983 release. Sphere is Kenny Barron, Charlie Rouse, Ben Riley and Buster Williams. Just one of the best Be Bop recordings ever. And the Elekrta Musician series are well recorded/pressed LPs, :thumb:

CD: Bug Music-Don Byron on Nonesuch Records 78438-2 Music of the Raymond Scott Quintette, John Kirby & his Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Experiencing "Powerhouse" is not to be missed! I bring this CD to shows and am frequently asked by exhibitors for more info. This is what commercial redbook can/shoud sound like.  :thumb:

This is one of my favorite CDs as well. Favorite cut is Cotton Club Stomp.

Another great CD is "88 Basie Street" on JVC XRCD

What is Your Best Recording - Either LP or CD?

Hard to choose the best....but I think some might enjoy these two...on Cd...and also available on LP....both are Reference Recordings...from awhile back.

Jazz.....

Mike Garson - "The Oxnard Sessions, Volume Two".....Samples..

I like the tunes....and some fine players...Mike Garson-Brian Bromberg-Ralph Humphrey-Eric Marienthal-Billy Mintz. The players are all top notch and the tunes included range from beautifully interpretive piano solos by Garson to some of the hardest driving jazz you will hear from a small jazz ensemble. The talent from Reference Recordings and this Garson group is unsurpassed.Keith Johnson is the engineer....in charge. And "All Blues" is a fine track... :thumb:

Airto Moreira,Flora Purim,and Joe Farrell - "Three Way Mirror"....Samples...

Once again...nice tunes...fine players....good recording. Many...way back when...used this recording as a demo Cd to show off their systems. I enjoy the music...and all the different sounding instruments...give it a spin.
This is a very moody album. There is hypnotic, smooth feeling to these tracks that is positively magical. The selections are eclectic, and there is something special in every piece. Track 1 begins with a fretless four-string acoustic bass and hand clapping, and builds into a colorful array of guitar and vocals. And what sonics! The entire recording was accomplished in Oxnard CA's civic auditorium-with a single mike! This creates a true sense of space around the musicians and singers. No electronic reverb here. You may not listen to this all the time, but it will grow on you.
Turn off the lights and enjoy!

MoFi John Lennon - Imagine

It is truly the best mastered, and best pressed record I have heard. It also doesn't hurt that I love the album.

On CD it's a toss-up. It's either Brian Setzer Orchestra on Hollywood Records #HR-61565-2, or Aaron Copland - The Music of America Tel-Arc #CD 80339.

On LP it's also a toss up between Friedmann's Indian Summer on Narada N-63002 or Andreas Vollenweider on CBS records FM 39963.

Not only cause their recorded well, but I really like them.

Wayner  aa

Friedman - Indian Summer on Narada N-63002  :thumb: bought this a while ago on Wayner's recommendation It sounded very good on my project 3 tt but it is phenomenal on my VPI. If you don't own a copy do your self a favor and get one Not my normal cup of tea but its really good.

Ed

Based upon your recommendations I just received a copy of Indian Summer by Friedemann, and am listening to it for the 1st time. Your right, it is an excellent recording. Exotic music that is crystal clear. With the Daedalus DA-1's, my VPI and the ZYX modified by The Soundsmith, it sounds very good. Thanks for your recommendations.  :D  :thumb:

Sara K, Water Falls from Stockfish records is amazing. It's direct to master and the sonics are breathtaking. Also the Mobile Fidelity LPs of Muddy Waters Folk Singer and John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band. whubbard, I'm glad to hear that Imagine is really good as well. I've been considering buying it and it's as good as Plastic Ono band it ought to just what the doctor ordered. :thumb:

There have been several references to Friedemann/ Indian Summer in this thread. I agree with everyone wholeheartedly about this album. It's definitely one of my best-sounding.

There is a recording by Ben Tavera King entitled Desert Dreams which is in the same league as Indian Summer sound-wise. And for years when I recorded to cassette I would put Indian Summer on one side and Desert Dreams on the other side of the tape because the two albums compliment each other really, really well. King plays acoustic guitar, as does Friedemann. This album has a very distinctive, pleasing southwestern "flavor".

You wanna paint a picture? These two albums will do it!

There are many great sounding albums, but one that comes to mind is an English import version of "On The Boards" by the old Irish band Taste. You wouldn't expect this album to sound this good but it's wonderful.

What is Your Best Recording ?

Another "gem"....a double LP by Joe Jackson...."Big World".

"Big World is a 1986 live album by Joe Jackson. The album was recorded in front of an invited audience at the Roundabout Theatre in New York City on January 22-25, 1986. Jackson's intent was to capture the excitement and spontaneity of a live performance, but without any interference from the crowd. The audience remains silent during the recording per Jackson's request, so no applause is heard in the recording. The music was mixed live from microphones on each instrument and then recorded directly into a stereo digital tape recorder. Unlike most live recordings, no post-recording mixing or overdubbing was performed. Therefore the music heard on the album is exactly as it was played live during the concert performances."

Further info....here......it rocks !!  :D

That's weird, but you've made me want to take a listen. Have you heard it on cd?

Simple sounds and a powerful raw voice are present in Dan Auerbach's Keep it Hid, 2009, Nonesuch.

I think it is very well recorded. There's a lot of quiet in this album which you can feel just as much as the musicians. The deep soft bass drum is pretty omnious on "When the night comes"

Anyone else have this? I listen to the record more that the CD.

With many hours of listening I think that my best recordings are:

1.  Vinyl - Sheffield Lab-5 - Dave Grusin - Discovered Again - The best piano that I have heard
2.  CD - Stereophile - Rendezvous - Amazing cymbals and soundstage
3.  Night and the City by Kenny Barron and Charlie Haden
4.  SACD - Mark Levinson - Live Recordings at Red Rose Music - Great recordings with a wide variety of music

I am trying to decide which is the best between these three, and have not made up my mind.

What are your best recordings, regardless of format?

Hey JCC, I would love to hear this..............
Vinyl - Sheffield Lab-5 - Dave Grusin - Discovered Again

I will have to try and find this.

There are two Sheffield Versions  for Dave Grusin - Discovered Again. One is D2D and the other is from the tape. The Black cover is D2D. The Black with Red Border is from the tape. The D2D version is a great recording, and I still think that it is the best that I own.
