modded Jadis Da-5 amp

you see the plate cap above

Tungsol TS-5439B a perfect 6550 replacement

but are there other tubes like this?
Cannot find any text about these tubes on Google except from the seller i bought it from

I had to mod the Jadis by lengthen pin 3 to the plate cap on top of the tube
The Da-5 is a 6550 amp

They sound much better more crisp, 3D and musical then the winged C 6550

Did you look in tubedata.org?  Sometimes they have equivalent tube listings.  Not sure how rare those are.  Looks like they were intended for higher voltages (which is the reason for the anode on top) like in transmission applications.   Like a modernization of the 807.

The 807 begat the 6L6, the 6L6 begat the 6550.  The 807 was transmitter tube with anode cap for higher voltages.

It looks like a sweep tube due to the Compactron socket (or is it Loctal?). The only tube which looks remotely like it is the 6146W and that has an octal base. Of the sweep tubes, a 6JS6C looks close.

Cool tube!  :D

You might consider rewiring the amp for the 6146W if those are too hard to find.

is the 6146w a perfect replacement for 6550? ah no than it does not need rewiring  :duh:

Of course it would have to be rewired- goes without saying.  It would need to be rebiased as well- but that's not a big problem. I don't think you'll ever find an exact substitute for that tube. Naturally, the 6650 or KT88 would work great as well.

The photo shows 439B, not 539B.

Good remark
Interesting
I noticed it too and negated it as it should be 539B as this was/is always the name the seller used, so i thought
it looks like a 4 because of the angle..Believing is seeing .tssk tssk

Because of yr remark i checked and indeed all the tubes are marked TS-439B No difference in Google, even less
findings as now the seller and Audiogon auction links are left out

Here's a 1959 version of the same tube with "solid" black plates.  The plate cap is missing on this example so I pinched an alligator clip to show it's presence.  I'm not certain that "TS-439B" is a good type number, but it's all we have to go on.  Be nice to find a couple dozen :)

My understanding, and from working with the tubes for years, is that the 6146W has a 25 watt plate dissapation while the 6550 has 35 watt plate dissapation. Also the screen is different in "placement", voltages, G2/G1 difference etc.

So I would not replace a 6550 with a 6146W without changes in circuit design.

Cheers.

35 watt plate dissipation. I use them in my AVA Ultimate 70's.

The Philips brand 6BG6 has the larger plates and is identical.  I take it the G2/G1 ratio is the same. Nice work.
