Pre Amp w/multiple inputs and good phono stage?
« on: 3 Feb 2009, 01:26 pm »
I started looking at new Pre amps once I decided to upgrade my table.  I also run my Oppo/Firestone as well as my TT.  I have been looking for phono stages that allow multiple inputs.  No luck.  Am i missing something?  I have the cambridge 640P right now.  I don't want to add a pre amp and a phono preamp.  I am thinking I will just build the "El cheapo" tube stage and add a switcher.  But I don't know if I like the "el cheapo" pre amp either....

Budget under $400.

This is the closest I found but it's still way over your budget.  http://www.pacificvalve.us/MusicianPreamp.html Maybe you can find what you want in the used market within your budget like this one.  Bargain to get under $400? http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?preatran&1238681755&/Naim-32.5-preamp

You could try something like this Yaqin MS-12B (or the corresponding Grant Fidelity P-307). MM Phono pre with RIAA, 1 Line Level In for a CD, Volume Control, 2 Outputs to go directly to a power amp or into a Pre/Integrated. Really bad ergonomics though, but I'm still thinking about getting one myself.

With room to spare....and a tuner and amp thrown in for good measure, too  :thumb:

It has 'direct' feature so it removes the tone control and lighting for the purest signal it possibly can offer.

You might want to buy refurb on this one tho...I understand this model Pioneer had a glitch that needed exorcising first

I understand the Harman-Kardon 2 channel receivers are pretty commendable, too.

There's also a ton of vintage gear that will fit the bill, as well.

Wow thanks for all the feedback!  I have looked at some of those preamps.  The receiver is a bit of an overkill :)  I don't plan on giving up my EL84 Monoblocks or my 2A3.  I am starting to lean more towards building my own.  I think I have a power tranny that may work...for starters.  I was just hoping there was something out there i was missing.

Van Alstine listed a Transcendence 7 preamp with phone on AVAHIFI for $695. You can see it on the Audio By Van Alstine circle.

Van Alstine makes outstanding products. Note the link below.

I am more than happy with the AVA Insight EC preamp. It has 7 line level inputs and if ordered with the phono option, can be very glorious for vinyl listening. It is solid state but will drive almost any tube amp to delightful levels. I actually have two of these preamps, one driving my Insight 260ex power amp and the other is driving my AVA U70 tube amp. Build quality is top notch with 3 year warranty. It also has a nice headphone amp inside that should drive most phones to good levels.

Whoops, I realized I am not supposed to talk about our equipment in these circles, sorry.
