I upgraded the amp and the preamp at the same time, therefore I have no way of telling what the improvement of the Pas4i is, could you enlight me on what the improvement is before and after?
In general, the upgraded Super Pas 4i is a lot less "tubey" and a lot more detailed. This translates more specifically into hearing instruments sound more like they are suppose to sound. Violins, cellos, brass instruments, etc -- you name it, they sound more like the real thing than they used to. On rock and jazz music, it is easier to hear the specific sound of a type of drum in the drum kit. Everything is more "crisp", if you will. The improvement is across the board. I listen more to records than anything else, but I do sometimes listen to CD's and SACD's. They come across better than they used to too.
I envy you in that you were able to upgrade both your amp and pre at the same time. Besides the preamp, I did upgrade from a Omega III TOPP-DAC to the Insight DAC. That was a big improvement as well. That's all I could do last year. I hope I can get the amp upgraded this year.
I hope this answers your question. I went into a little more detail in another thread which you shouldn't have much trouble finding. It is under the title "The Super Pas 4i improved". It's down on page 4 now.
