Record with two holes???
« on: 1 Feb 2009, 10:59 pm »
My wife bought two of these records on eBay and they both have two holes.  There are other records on the 'bay that have similar hole arrangements.  These were made in 1946-47.  Any thoughts?  (I've already thought of a couple of jokes, but no real good ideas about why there are two spindle holes.)

Collectors items now! Or are the "cutouts"?

I can't see the pic...but I don't think it's worth more (like a 1955 double die obverse Lincoln penny)

Maybe the master tape had really bad "wow," so they drilled a new hole to compensate.  Or maybe a cigarette burn hole? I think jqp got it right - cutout.

I don't think even the Nakamichi could fix that much off-set.  The wife didn't pay very much for these, just strange that they all have that extra hole.  Cut-outs are the most likely idea, but just thought I'd run it by you guys.  Thanks for the comments.

This is not quite the kitten with two heads, but i will give my thoughts. From the wear on the center spindle it looks like that was the one that was used,no surprise there. The second hole looks like 1] a mistake 2] an aftermarket drill for display purposes 3] now you can start looking for that turntable with two spindles.

if you look closely, there are two holes on the other side of the record as well.

(sorry, I couldn't resist).

Think it is a "punch-out"/cut-out and the dude went wild with the punch?

The second off-center hole is an anti-rotation hole used to lock the records in place, to keep them from rotating on the platter from a real heavy old-time tonearm, which could make the record slip.

That's a reasonable answer Wayner, actually makes sense - like a keyway to lock a shaft. But is it really true, or you just pulling legs?    :D

Knowing Wayne, that's an easy answer.

I like Wayner's answer because these are a laminated paper disk, not vinyl.  There's no way that these could be played on a Victrola or Pathe' since the tonearm would just stop them and the platter would spin underneath.

I actually think I remember an extra hole on some of the old Victrolas. Anybody else have one or have you seen one? They usually had green felt on the mat and the old brass tonearm that took steel needles. this was the state of the art turntable, back in the 1930s.

I'm not that old.

Yeah.  I seem to remember what Wayner describes being found on Victrolas in the parlor of my neighbors' farm houses back when i was a kid during WWll.
