A buddy e-mailed me about his death. I had never even heard of him! (I'm so ignorant)

I agree - a sad loss and an often overlooked artist who lived a hard life but could sing like an angel. If you don't know him, do yourself a favor and get a copy of 'Solid Air' -- I cannot imagine any music lover not enjoying this, it's a great start and he has a strong catalog of others you can dip into after this if interested. I grew up listening to him in Ireland and England where he was very popular and a frequent performer on the live circuit. A friend told me this week she saw him live last year again and he was reduced to a wheelchair and not quite the intense, sweaty life force he used to be, which made her sad but thankful she made the effort one more time. RIP John.

A great talent. I like Solid Air best as well. Also Bless the Weather.

I really like "No Little Boy" where he reinterprets many of his older songs, and for me, his more mature world weary performances resonate more. Although, the originals are great as well.

I saw him in concert when I was young, he was opening for Eric Clapton, and he was actually pretty horrible that night - drunk out of his mind and nothing but waves of feedback. I rediscovered him later and was sorry that I had written him off after that one performance, and hadn't listened to the critics and bought some of his albums. Well worth checking out. one of my favorites today.

Uncanny - I had my Transporter on random songs today and John Martyn kept coming up.  Very underestimated.
