If you had to sell all your audio equipment but one piece. Which one is left?

I was just wondering  :dunno: With the economy downturn, layoffs,or if just penny pinching forced you to sell ALL of your audio stuff but just ONE PIECE. Which audio device or equipment would you NOT be able to part with?

Mine= Benchmark DAC1USB.

I know there are other modded and DIY kits out there that some like alot more than the Benchmark, but this piece has made the biggest difference in my sound. It is linked directly to my amp (no need for a preamp), makes a great headphone amp, and acts as my external DAC for both my CD player and modded
Squeezebox music server!!

Not much good a DAC would do with a transport, amp and speakers to go with it.

Mine right now would be my 6550 e-linear SE amp, because I just built it.

ThomDP

None.

You can take them all.

My clock radio since its the only all in one device. :)
Say I had an ipod, but no computer...
MAybe an iphone, since you can listen to internet streams through it...

Power Cord!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My ears :)

Seriously, my tube DVD player, which after much hoopla turned out to be a one of a kind because we waited too long to bring it to the market, thinking it was a DVD player. Turned out to be the best CD player (that happens to play DVD's too) I've heard and when this was confirmed by many, we went to launch and certain parts are no longer available in quantity. Big nuts eh !

Cheers,
Ian

funny that someone brought this topic up ... i've been grappling with this question for sometime now ....

I'll probably leave the squeezebox alone. All the rest will be up for grabs, if things don't improve real soon :(

I would keep my speakers and re build from there

If it is a system that plays music not just a component, then:
I would keep my modified ipod (imod) with Dr. Xin Headphone Amp and one of my headphones
As a component alone, I would keep
TRL battery modified CD player - I waited for months to get it and supports the argument that the most important component is the source, even though I generally believe that speakers are the most important component in the audio chain.

  • I'm just not right!

Yeah, it would have to be my portable CD Walkman. I can go anywhere and listen to anything. Then again, I would also need a couple of big boxes and a Magna Cart to haul around all the CD's that I want to listen to.

My Martin-Logan reQuest speakers. They're not made anymore (for 5K, anyway) and the newer ones look goofy.

What do you mean "IF"!?  :(

Last to go would be my Gallo Solo speakers.  No longer made so I would not be able to buy them again in wealthier times and their successors aren't as good.  Second to last would be my VMPS subwoofers.  Not like I use them these days (not enough amps that work to go 'round) but shipping would be a huge pain in the ass.  My RE Designs preamp would also be tough to give up for the same reason.  It has no other equivalent product in the marketplace.  Wait, you said one didn't you.  I fucked up the answer.

  • Without music, life would be a mistake.
VMPS RM40's - too much of a pain to ship, not high enough used value, too hard and expensive to replace once things turned back around.

Been there...done that...sold it all.

My SD speakers - since they can be driven with one of my Trends Audio integrated digital/amps (10wpc) and iPod.
There is no way I am selling my iPod and Trends is not a huge money generator either so.......yes , my speakers.
Why - because with these little gadgets it still sounds kind of good and that would have let me get by.

But if given the ultimatum - iPod hands down.

I would keep my BPT 2400 watt balanced power conditioner that's been highly modified. Why?? Cuz as much of a music lover that I am, I'm just as big a sports fan and my power conditioner does wonderful things for both avenues. My Odyssey Lorelei's loudspeakers would be a close 2nd but they can be replaced at the same price I paid 5 years ago. In comparison the BPT's price has doubled and that doesn't include everything that's been done to mine. The BPT is my foundation that I build any system around,,, the foundation stays! :thumb:

My Heathkit rebuilt and modified W5M monoblocks. They would be relatively hard to replace and I have little desire to upgrade.
