Hi Guys,
I have been out of the world of vinyl for @18yrs but kept my albums in storage.  I am about to jump back in and was just blown away by a Michell TecnoDec with a modified (by Michell) Rega RB250 tonearm and Dynavector 10X MC cartridge.  Pre was a Musical Surroundings Phonomena II.

My question, considering the cash involved, is this really an awesome piece or was I just wowed from not listening to vinyl for so long?  This was dead quiet with a soundstage that you could walk into

The outfit would run close to $2500, which is about $1K more than I expected to spend.  Input from current vinyl addicts and head slaps (if needed)are requested .

Thanks,
Walt

That's definitely a decent vinyl rig and worth the money...

You should be able to have a lot of fun with your records with that setup.

Thanks Jeff.  Good to hear it from someone that gets to see lots of cool toys.

Guess I'll wait for my tax refund and spring for it.

The only other cost I would figure into your calculation is LP cleaning. While the demo you heard had quiet LPs, are your 18-year-old stacks of wax in similar shape? After 18 years of the silence of CDs just make sure you're mentally prepared for those LPs in your collection that aren't in such good shape.

I've heard this table twice and thought it was very, very good.  I was first attracted by it's looks, but it's sound was quite good as well.  I remember being very impressed by the solidity and weight of the sound. These are just my thoughts, but it sounds like you are sold on the sound, so I say go for it.

 Enjoy!

Hey!

I really like their Gyro SE. I've never heard it but to me it is one of the best looking audio piece ever. :D

Honestly it is on my list of TT to check if I were to buy a new TT. :D It had been around for a long while so I think they must do something right sound wise also. :D

Take care,

I have the Gyro and reckon it's the cat's moew.  One thing with Michell is that they are an engineering based company and one of the longest lived manufacturers extant today.  This long history also ensures an upgrade path is available should something new come along.

These factors and their inherent beauty were what drove me to buy one.  In most cases high end audio stuff is all very good and the differences not that big, although people fight over these modest differences with a passion, but passion is what it is all about.  I figured I would only get one shot at buying a good turntable and went with the Michell as I knew it was a quality unit and could upgrade parts such as power supply, motor and bearings if something better came along and it was these factors that eventually swayed my decision making.
