How much is this rack worth? Make me an offer!
« on: 27 Jan 2009, 06:48 am »
As I'm ready to leave the US for good, it is time for me to get rid of some heavy stuff, like this rack (one of a kind!):

I am talking about the rack in red color (right side of the picture), it is made from Borneo Ironwood, botanical name is "Eusideroxylon zwageri".

Their mechanical properties are impressive (extremely heavy!!!):
Air-Dry Density:  835- 1,185 kg/m3
Shrinkage radial:   2.0 %
tangential:  4.5%

I believe I am the ONLY PERSON in the entire US who has a rack made with this exotic wood. The wood is almost extinct due to de-forrestation.

This rack is too heavy, I don't think I want to ship the whole thing, I am thinking of dissemble it and sell each shelf as ampstand. Each shelf measures 23.6" x 18" x 1.6". You can use it as a stand - just drill 3 holes and add 3 spikes, or you can cut the shelf up and make plenty of small pucks to put underneath all your equipment.

So, I'm thinking $150 per shelf + shipping.

What city are you in?  Per shelf, or for the whole thing?  What about the stand on the left?

Thanks,

Bob

thunderbrick, the shelf on the left is a maple rack I bought from timbernation for $1000. Honestly, I am do not plan to sell it because I don't like how it sounds, but if you don't care about sound, and you're looking for a sturdy rack with good finish, then feel free to make me an offer. I guess I am going to lose half of what I pay for

The finish on the Borneo Ironwood rack isn't as good as the timbernation rack, because this Ironwood rack was made by a carpenter in Malaysia who does everything by hand (no machine cutter!). But in terms of sound,  it easily put a $3000 Finite Elemente Pagoda rack to shame. I think you'll get more value out of it by making small pucks out of the shelf. Heck.. even the 4 legs were made by solid ironwood too, you can make lots of pucks with it. :green:

Barry,

I will meet you half way, say in Nashville, TN and take the Ironwoods off you.  What kind of deal you want to give me?

I am tempted.  Say you aren't leaving the country for good?  :shake:

Borneo Ironwood!

I use to make pipes out of that stuff in college.

Very heavy, sinks like a rock in water.

Cool stuff!!

Man,

You don't know how enticing an offer you are making.  You are being way too generous with your offer.  I would offer you more.   If I didn't have a wife, a daughter, a cat and a dog to account for, I would drive down there on a weekend and take that one of a kind rack off you in a heart beat.  But I can't right now.  :duh:

It would be a shame to break that apart.  I hope someone reading this is inspired to drive down there to buy the whole thing from you at the right price, which I think is more than $300.

I think it would be a real shame to break it up.  In my view it is worth more whole than the sum of its parts.

People,  I really have to apologise, as much as I would love to sell you this thing, oh boy, I tried to dissemble the rack just now, but it took me freaking half an hour just to move it out to a cleared area. And then I realized that I need at least another person to help me to dissemble the damned rack (one person unscrewing, another person holding the shelf).  Ok... I finally figure it's really not worth my time trying to sell it. I can't imagine the hassle I will need to go through to pack this thing up (bubble wrap, one box for each shelf), and then have to bring it to FedEx again. Boy.. that effort alone is worth more than the $300 I initially had in mind.

So, if I can't find any local buyer, I will just bring the rack with me to Malaysia. There will be 3 'strong' men  :weights: coming to help me pack up everything in my house and move everything into a 40ft container.

Again, I am sincerely sorry about this. :dunno:
