James, have you used the Bryston active crossover with MG 1.6's?

If so, did you like it a lot better than stock, or not really worth the bother?

Hi Jeff,

You mean by-passing the passive network in the 1.6?

I use it with the 3.6s. I like it much better this way. Are you willing to perform surgery on the 1.6s?

Yes, not scared to get out the tools.....

Provided the results are worth it.  I've seen a lot of good crossover mods for
the Magnepans and I'm wondering if that is all the further I should go, or go
crazy and get an active crossover and pair of power amps....

Not sure how far I'm going to take this project yet, just collecting data.

When doing the same thing Bryston did at THE Show, (i.e. hooking my 1.6's
up to a much bigger and higher quality amp than the normal owner probably
would have), I was even more impressed with the sound in those speakers!

Hi Jeff,

It's odd you mentioned this because I have been discussing doing a active version of the MG1.6 with Magnepan.  I did a review (available if you want to see it on Audiocircle) on the MG1.6's a year or so ago in one of my systems at home and was mighty impressed with the quality of the speaker.

I have used the 10B on MG3.6's and Tympany IV's and the result was excellent.

There are a few issues when bypassing the passive network in the MG1.6 - like 'slopes' used and 'Acoustical' vs 'Electrical' crossover points but I may give it a try.
