Fitzcarraldo

Saw this Werner Herzog film on DVD the other night. It is a pretty epic film about a man who wants to bring the opera to an Amazonian city in the colonial days.

It stars Klaus Kinski as a man who is obsessed and amazingly effective at meeting his goals, and is not afraid to fail, because he intends to succeed in the end. And he is definitely an opera fan! Lets just say he would drag a steamboat over a mountain to achieve his goals...

Definitely worth watching on many levels, and there is a Criterion Collection documentary on the making of the film that is supposed to be superb.

don't forget the "death and transfiguration" opening of Herr Richard Strauss.

I agree, epic in every way

I love watching characters like that, sounds like a decent flick.  What year did it release? And whatever happened to his lovely daughter?

A quick check shows it was released in 1982, as was the documentary Burden Of Dreams

Lots of good "audiophile stuff" in this one

Original recordings~ Enrico Caruso / RCA
Victor Richard Strauss, Death and Transfiguration
Guiseppe Verdi~ Ernani, Original Production
Leoncavallo~ Ridi Pagliaccio /I Pagliacci
Meyerbeer~ O Paradiso / L'Africana
Michel Vuylsteke~ Musique du Burundi, Ensemble de Tambours
Jules Massenet~ Il Sogno / Manon Lescaut
Guiseppe Verdi~ Quartett / Rigoletto
Giacomo Puccini~ O Mimi, tu piú non torni / La Bohéme
Vincenco Bellini~ A te o cara, amor talora... / I Puritani

Also, the scenes with Fitzcarraldo playing his turntable on the deck of the steamboat is an audiophile classic
