WTB: Integrated Amplifier $400 Budget
« on: 25 Jan 2009, 02:20 am »
I'm look to purchase an integrated amplifier that meets the following requirements:

4+ Single Ended Inputs
Remote Volume and Source Select
50 Watts Per Channel or more, probably solid state  (Will be paired with 91db efficient GR Research AV-3's)

My wife can't operate my current complicated setup, so it's going into another room and I'm putting together something pretty basic for the main room.

New or used is fine.  There are some Cambridge Audio Azur units that look to fit my needs and budget nicely, but I figured I would see if anybody here has something collecting dust first.

Rick.

I would check out the Onkyo A-9555. It has had good reviews and seems like it would be easy to use. I would like to pick one up someday and have been watching for it to fall out of favor, but its been holding up well.

keep your eyes peeled for a used thule ia100.  excellent performance for s/s gear.  if you can do w/o remote, look for a sansui integrated - au717, au919, or if you are lucky, you can find a nice au11000 at or near that price.

At that price point, I'd consider a used NAD C370 or C372 integrated if you can score one.  I'd also check out a hybrid Jolida integrated, perhaps the 1701?

Another great option would be an Audio Refinement Complete integrated (which would be my choice, if I were to happen across one).

The integrated that always appealed to me in this range was the Audio Analogue Puccini (or, better still, the Puccini SE).  These come up on the used market rarely though.

Audio Refinement Complete.  I've had mine for many very happy years.

Seeing as this is a WTB thread...linky.

Looks like it is still available, had a few people pm about it but nothing solid yet.  If you have any questions/concerns/comments feel free to ask in this thread, that thread, or pm.

As for Cambridge, I had one for a while, 640A I think.  It was pretty solid, sounded great, looked nice, but I ended up selling it due to a way to sensitive volume control.  One push up was a 6-10db jump, hard to dial in just right, especially when it is a 60+ year old woman at the helm.

Thanks for some useful replies here.  I am presently looking into a couple of the Audio Refinement integrated units on the used market, but if none of those are going to work out your Onkyo looks interesting as well.

A few years ago I brought a little Sonic Impact T amp to a friends place.  After hearing it he sent his Audio Refinement Complete to Plurison for servicing.  They inspected the unit and said that there wasn't anything wrong with it.  Upon receiving the amp back from Plurison, he promptly put it up for sale and has given up reading certain audio magazines.  At that time he was using an Arcam CDP with JM Lab and Silverline speakers.

YMMV

Huh??...my mileage did vary alot.
I also have a Sonic Impact T-amp. Ran it off of batteries and a wal-wart. Its running my computer rig right now. Facinating and pretty good sounding for what it is.
In my main system, it didn't sound tooooo bad. Kind of small, but on piano it was painfully hard, hit unusually hard even at modest volumes. It consistently became painful after 5 minutes on piano passages.
There is no comparison between the two if you're suggesting any. The complete does most everything quite beautifully. Great highs, decent detail, good bloom, very good and punchy bass.  Very musical too.

I meant to say..."small sounding"...not just small.

Well maybe it was broken after all??  But Plurison gave it a clean bill of health.  All I know is Chris flogged the thing and went with a Rogue.  Before he sent the Audio unRefinement packing, I tried it on my system and wasn't the least bit impressed.

Sounds good, I trust Zero's judgment to the fullest degree possible.

Doesn't fit the OP's descrpition, but I love the SI T-Amp, as well as the Trends TA-10.1.  The SI especially keeps me humble, every once in a while I bust it out to replace my $2k amps and $500 pre.  I was actually AMAZED at how good it sounded with a Trekstor Vibez ($180 DAP).

Perhaps the Pioneer Elite SX-A6-J.

$319 'B' stock, http://eusa.stores.yahoo.net/pielsxaurere.html
$414 new, http://eusa.stores.yahoo.net/pielsxauresx.html

It has nice specs and a couple of AudioCircle members here really like it.

If I recall, there is a review of it in the online TONE magazine.

If you stretch to $500, you can buy it from a better known reseller.

Now, now....it doesn't jump 6-10db, at least since I've had it. It's very sensitive at the low end, but from 9-2 o'clock it's fine. I'm debating about putting it on the market.

OP, let me know if you'd like more info.

I know the OP isn't looking for a flea amp, I just mentioned it for the sake of comparison.  The LF on the Sonic Impact roll off at 200 Hz and the top end takes flight around 5K.  It's what happens in between makes that amp so remarkable.  It was also the basis of the Clari-T that for launched Red Wine Audio, whose amps are noted for being nothing but spectacular and world class.

There is a Arcam A-70 integrated amp on Craigslist in Fayetteville, AR (Bentonville, maybe) for $400.   I thought about buying it but will probably get a Parasound unit.
