A/V-3 - distance from wall?
« on: 23 Jan 2009, 03:16 pm »
Quick question...

Regarding the A/V-3, what would be the minimum acceptable distance from the wall behind the speakers (assuming the transmission line terminates to the rear)?  Would 12-15" be OK?

Thanks,
Joe

12 to 15 inches is about a minimum. I'd pull them out a little further if you can.

You can always add a layer of No Rez to the bottom side of the port, or even the top side for that matter, and it will shift the tuning frequency a little lower (because the diameter of the port decreased but the length remained the same) and that will give you some port output in a lower range where it is already down in output and rolling off.

I agree with Danny that 12-15 inches is the minimum you should go. My AV-3's are presently located 18 inches from the rear wall and they sound just fine.

This is something that continually confuses me.  Is there a standard measurement when they state "x" distance from the wall?  Do they measure fron the rear of the rear of the speaker or from the front baffle to the wall?  Is there any consistency or standard?

In this 12-15" example, it was abviously from the rear - or else the speaker would be flat against the wall with the 11.5" depth of the A/V-3. But is that the normal measurement technique - speaker rear to wall?  I've always heard "2 ft min from wall" for the A/V-3 (and other ported designs) which if measured from the front baffle would be the 12" in the above eample.

This is the minimum, not the optimum position.  I have mine out about 4 ft from the wall.
