Care to build some baffles? (OB servo subs)
« on: 22 Jan 2009, 10:12 pm »
If not for Hank, I would not be enjoying my NEO2X so again I turn to the forum and ask...would anyone care to build a good baffle for one of Dannys OB servo subs?  Pretty simple task but I have no tools/skill .... Please let me know!

Warren, Michigan (48093)

These baffles should be easy for many people out there...so quick, easy money  :thumb:
I've tried some different places in my area for having baffles built (when I wanted some for my hawthorne OBs) and really couldn't find a place that took me seriously.

I would think that with this economy, you'd be able to find a cabinet shop with enough open time to be happy to build small projects.  Shipping would be quite a bit, unless you could take just the parts stacked, wrapped, boxed and shipped, then you assemble them.  Do you have, or could you borrow clamps?  How about a drill to do the driver screw holes?

I had so much fun building mine, I would enjoy (will enjoy) building more speakers in the future. In fact, the part I enjoyed best is building the "boxes".

I'm in Duncanville TX (at the south west corner of Dallas.
And I'm very expensive.

A beautiful daughter like Ruth will do that to ya  ;)  But she's worth it! :thumb:  Congrats Fred..  Get her listening to good OB bass at an early age. Then she will only date serious audiophiles. haha

What is your opinion of using 1-1/4" solid wood top, bottom and sides, 1-1/4" mdf baffles, and covering the front and back with grille cloth?

Solid wood can be pretty resonant. It stick with using it only in combination with MDF.

Yes, I have to say that you should never use hardwood more than 1/8" thick or so, because it will MOVE and check/crack, according to humidity, which we are experiencing extremes of now.  Relative humidity here in Austin is 19%.  By Spring, it could be 30%.  That is a huge diffence in wood.  If you work with super thin, paper-backed veneer, it's not a problem.  Plus, with thin veneer, you have an incredibly beautiful wood grain variety to choose from.

I agree with this to an extent.  In large part failure is due to a lack of understanding wood movement.  In the case of the OB enclosure the wood is not bound and movement is not a problem,  the wood has the ability to expand and contract as much as it needs.  There are numerous speaker designers who use wood thicker than 1/8"..Salk, SP Tech, Terry Cain (now Lovegrove), Meadowlark.....

I would think you could use the solid wood but it begs the question of "why?". the sold wood will cost a lot more and it will move a little around the speakers. I would think at think at this point some high end voidless plywood might be good.

That said, I love solid wood, it it would definitely make a beautiful statement. Personally I would goo for huge dovetails and through mortises... and I would like a more rustic hand planed, maybe even scrub-planed surface. Traditional oil finish... yeah, I'm liking it .

Thanks, George.  I'll have the matching amp box done in a couple days and post some final pics before I ship them off.

It looks big in the picture.  The cabinet is about 15"x15"x24"tall and looks more like a small end table than a speaker.

Here is the sub completed.  Lighting and camera suck but you get the point.  The grilles are magnetic and the gray strip is the pull to get the grille off.  One small Speakon connection near the bottom.  Sub with drivers probably weighs 70lbs.  Shot with semigloss conversion varnish...cherry should darken up very nice with a little time.  Who said solid wood construction is not for speakers
