Sealing Superhemps?
« on: 22 Jan 2009, 12:40 am »
Hi All,

I have Superhemp Alnico's and dual Deeps, and love the sound, but I always leave the foam port plugs in and was wondering if there could be any improvement available by sealing the cabinet completely, airtight?

My plan would be to remove the existing port and cover the hole that's left with a plate of some sort, probably 3/4" wood of some sort, using the original screw holes and sealing it all airtight.

This would change it from a ported box to acoustic suspension, and I suspect that this might not work very well. Currently, with the foam plugs, some air still gets through so I guess it's still semi-ported.

Before I bother, has anyone done this or thought about it, or does anyone have sealed Omega hemps?

I would give Louis a call but it's expensive from Australia plus time zones etc.

Any opinions?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

I would think that the limited amount of air that travels through the foam bungs would qualify the speaker as an aperiodic enclosure.

I bet Play-dough could be used to seal up the ports 100%, with a lot less work, and very easy to undo etc.  Painter's tape might work too (I would use painter's tape as the glue is much weaker, and will NOT leave a residue vs duct tape or some stronger tape).

I would think that the sound would not change too much, perhaps mildly less bass that might sound a little tighter.

Thanks Mark,

I guess I should try it and see! If I could get my act together I would measure before and after, I have all the gear to do it but no time to learn how and do it, yet.

Hi Steven,
Send Louis an email describing what you are thinking to do with your Super's. I'll call him for you and let him know to be on the look out for it.

Thanks Chris! I'll email him now.

I know he's a very busy man though so won't expect an answer soon. No rush for me anyway, just been thinking about it.

If you talk to him and he gives any advice that you can post here I'd much appreciate it!

Steve.
