Can't fast forward with Apple Lossless!
« on: 21 Jan 2009, 02:38 am »
I wish I had made this discovery before I ripped a zillion cds to Apple Lossless.   I can't use the fastforward/seek function. I must have missed that discussion, but here is confirmation

http://slimdevices.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/slimdevices.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5995&p_created=1168548811&p_sid=3Fqaaroj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MSwxJnBfcHJvZHM9MCZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9JnBfY3Y9JnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9c2Vlaw**&p_li=&p_topview=1

  :banghead:

So, any ideas about how to easily trade Apple Lossless for flac (or something)?   :banghead:

"Lossless"  encoding?  Really?  So... no loss of function?  It seems like I was able to seek within a song a long time ago, was this function taken away, or did I just not notice that it was never there?  If I give Apple my credit card number do you think I could use the "seek" function if I give them a nickel each time I use it?

My wife says, "Can't fast-forward, huh?  Did you try foreplay?"  What the heck did that mean?

Yes, I do realize I'm replying to own post.

Yep, this has been known pretty much from the beginning...has something to do with Apple charging a hefty licensing fee for Slim Devices to incorporate native decoding on their devices, and Slim Devices not wanting to pay for it.

I've not used this, but here is a tool to convert your ALAC files into FLAC:

Thanks for the link!

It seems that I was able to fast-forward at one time, but I guess not.  I remember thinking that the fast-forward function on my SB3 was not as seamless as a standard cd player.  Well, anyway, it doesn't matter now.

Now, I just have to decide how much trouble to go through to gain that little feature.  I almost want to convert to flac on principle alone, even if I never fast-forward or rewind a part of any track ever again.

it could mean you're a lucky guy for having a wife who would ask you to try foreplay

edit:
of course the real question should be "on who, honey - you busy tonight?"

I'm glad somebody caught that joke!  She thought it was funnier that I did    :icon_lol:
I am lucky BTW.

Anyway, I'm a bit hesitant to run a conversion of 160 GB of files on my external HD before I get a new computer.  I suppose a task like that could bring my little Pentium 4 2.53GHz to beg for mercy.
