Who are the great villians of cinema?
« on: 20 Jan 2009, 04:46 am »
After watching my Region 2 dvd of The Last of the Mohicans, I commented to the wife that "Mugwa" was one of the top bad guys in cinema, which led to the question, who else makes the short list?

Raph Fiennes colonel in Schindler's List
Javier Bardem  in No Country for Old Men
Orson Welles  from The Third Man
Sir Anthony Hopkins as Hannibel Lectur

For me, you have to believe that such evil could exist- leaving out the Darth's of the movie world.

Sauron - The Lord Of The Rings:  The ultimate deceiver, the epitome of evil.
The Joker - The Dark Knight:  Enough cannot be said about it.
The Evil being that possesses and kills in Twin Peaks.

Yeah, Mr. Nice Guy Henry Fonda made one helluva villain.  I still remember the scene where the kid hangs his brother.

Frank would have been my first choice too.

Andy Robinson in Dirty Harry (Scorpio)
Kenneth McMillan in Dune (Baron Harkonen)
Manfred Schulz(?) in McCabe & Mrs. Miller (The Kid who shoots the Cowboy on the bridge - not sure that's the right actor)
Richard Widmark in Kiss of Death (Tommy Udo - pushes woman in wheelchair down stairs).

Those are the ones that come immediately to mind.

Dennis Hopper was pretty twisted and disturbing as Frank Booth in "Blue Velvet".  In fact, I can barely remember anything about that film except Dennis Hopper (which is particularly amazing as I think Isabella Rossellini might have appeared naked at some stage).

I had to look up the actor's name, its  Sergi Lopez, who played the evil stepfather/Fascist officer in Guillermo del Toro's masterpiece "Pan's Labyrinth."  I can't think of a more evil character in any movie I've seen.

Hans Gruber

This was the first villain I thought of when I saw the topic of this thread.

Others IMHO:
Jack Torrence (The Shining)
Gordon Gecko (Wall Street)
HAL (2001: A Space Odyssey)
Dr. Evil (Austin Powers)

Good choices here. I'll add Robert De Niro as Max Cady in the 1991 version of Cape Fear.

De Niro played that role like it was a cartoon. A far better performance was put in by Mitchum in the original.
