BobM sure has a nice rack.  Shelfus Giganticus!  If those were any thicker you would have a filing cabinet.

Those are sand filled - 50lbs in each

BTW - I only wish I could post a picture of a really nice RACK without having this thread go to the wastebin  aa

Bob,

Save that for the "which rack for the best wood" thread.

I found some 1 1/4" thick particle board that is very dead for the shelves and they are supported by 1 1/4" purple heart end caps. I had to put it on casters due to the extreme weight. :duh:

Hey, everybody. I didn't mean to hijack this thread with a silly "wood" and "rack" joke.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled thread...

I've never built a rack, I just use what ever looks acceptable with isolation platforms.

I would think the harder the wood, the better.  And straight, if the wood ain't straight, it won't be much good either.

Browntrout conveys good logic, and I think I'll try what he suggests. I built my own version of a flexi-rack, except made it a rigid-rack. 1" oak shelves tightly fastened to 3/4" allthread with a 2" maple butcher block floating on top. Allthread legs are ground to points to pierce the carpet and under pad. Room is in the basement on a poured concrete slab.
So it makes sense to try and isolate my source, and couple my amps, pre and maybe dac.
I have a bunch of metal cones kicking about. My source, (cdp as transport), already rests on Herbies tenderfeet suppoting an isolation platform. The rest of the rig is on either sorbothane or rubber feet.
I do believe I'll give it a go this weekend.

Hey Doug, is that what the wife uses on you when she hears that you've bought yet another piece of overpriced audio equipment and called it a "bargain"?

That oak has likely been maintained with blood and other secretions. Not good for keeping it supple and preserved.
But hey, one man's rack.....
