Soundtracks & Scores!
« on: 19 Jan 2009, 07:59 pm »
I have taken on this new appreciation for scores...  Some of the Best that I've picked up:

The Fountain - Clint Mansell w/ Mogwai & The Kronos Quartet...  Beautiful music, by far one of the best OST's I've heard in a long time.  If I could describe it in a word it would be "Contemplative"...  Check out the movie, it's by far Aranofsky's best (I haven't seen The Wrestler though)...  Mastered by Bob Ludwig, the album is incredibly deep.  With a really good system you will be floored  by the quality on this disc. It's a dark album, with a universally uplifting sentment... Does that even make sense?

Beowulf - Alan Silverstri...  This one is alot of fun.  Mastered on PMC's too!  I play this for those exciteable by gigantic & majestic lore.

Mirrormask - ?...  I just saw this film on Blu-Ray.  Done by the Jim Henson co.  It has this Jazzy, New Age, Psychadelic Circus type thing going on.  Lots of Sax and percussion... It's on order but I think it will be among the best.  I'd recommend the film, but not for those who don't like to revisit films to get a better grip on it.

What Scores & OST's do other Circlers like?

The Player - Thomas Newman
Gattaca - Michael Nyman
The Essential Michael Nyman (Cues from various Peter Greenaway films)
The Thin Red Line - Hans Zimmer
25th Hour - Terence Blanchard

I'm sure there are others, but that's what I can think of off the top of my head.

Wagnerian scores used in the film Excalibur.  Forest Murmers really hits home.

Agreed, essential.

I quite like the Solaris soundtrack by Cliff Martinez.

More subtle and mainly electronic but great nonetheless.

John Ottman's The Usual Suspects is a classic.  I have yet to hear a soundtrack I like as much.

I have always loved the score to "American Beauty".

I also like "The Cider House Rules", "To Kill A Mockingbird", "Contact", "Babel".

A hard to find, but excellent soundtrack: Alice.  Music is composed by Italian jazz pianist Bernardo Sassetti.  Very melancholic, haunting & mysterious.
