caps for Clarinet/Cornet
« on: 18 Jan 2009, 07:10 pm »
I recently bought the Cornet2 and Clarinet boards, and am getting ready to order parts from Digikey.  I am very wet behind the ears (electronics wise, not age unfortunately), so will need, and much appreciate, some guidance.  And what better place?!  First, capacitors.  I will be going mostly stock parts, but would like to use Panasonic electrolytics instead of the Nichicons.  There are a bunch of caps with similar specs, which is confusing to a newb like me, as I don't yet understand all their differences.  So are the following okay?

47uf 450v
P13678-nd (493-1461 nichicon).  This is an EE series.  Spec sheet says it's new, based on the ED but 40% higher ripple current.  Is higher better here?

10000uf 10v
P10241-nd  (493-1275 nichicon)

470uf 10v
P10221-nd  (493-1269)  The lead spacing is .138 vs .098 for the Nichicon

.1uf 400v
PF4104-nd is out of stock.  Can I use P12091-nd, which is smaller?

Tubesforever recommended the ED, so am curious about the EE.  Sorry, no Mundorfs or teflons in my first build!  :-)  Tubes, your posts are very informative (many thanks), so maybe at a later time, funds permitting of course.

Thanks

The ED caps I purchased were part number P13563-ND  from page 1577 of their catalog.  I hear these were discontinued but I see 490 of these available tonight.  10 each would be $28.35 USD.  I think I will buy at least another 30 of these just for future projects.  They have specs equal to or surpassing the Nichicons and more importantly, they have less ESR as well.

I would not go back and do the TSHA 10,000 uf 16v caps again.  They were a pain to get to fit on the board.  I would just use the Nichicons there.

For the 0.10uf 400v caps, you could use a pair of Sprague Vitamin Q or the K40Y9 in 630 or 1000v values.  These are paper in oil caps and have a very nice natural sound quality.  I have also used the FT-3 0.10uf 600v teflons.  Right now the Spragues are in rotation on my C2.  I like these better than the specified Panasonic film caps or the Auricaps or Dynamicaps I have tried.

I am waiting for some 1000pf caps to arrive from Bulgaria.  Then I can supply more sets of the RIAA caps (1nf and 47nf) in K40Y9 PIO.  Check to see if the Panasonic film caps as specified are fine for the RIAA if they are still available.  If you feel the need to upgrade these I would recommend Sonicaps if you don't want to go PIO.  They sound very natural to my ears.

Cheers!

Usually.  All your substitutions should be ok.  It's best to start with something close to a "stock" design, as none of the parts are truly expensive.  Get the machine to function properly first.  Then start putting better tubes and caps into it.  You can take your time doing it, as these pieces will likely be with you for some time.

Thanks for the reply tubesforever, but you are waaay in front of my learning curve.  It looked to me like the EE caps are meant to be a replacement for the ED, so might be worth looking at.

Thanks Jim, that was what I wanted to know.  The Panasonic electrolylitics  have a better Lifetime spec, which is why I chose them.  Seemed like a good thing, but I don't know how important it is, or if it even makes a difference.  The out of stock one I have to substitute of course.  All other parts will be as listed in your instructions.  If the caps I listed are okay, I assume it's safe to go ahead with my order?  Once it's together and working it will have to stay that way for a while--only so much time and money, so I need to control myself!
