Let's find out just how true the valuations are for VMPS speakers.  What is the cost of the speaker(s) you switched away from when you bought your VMPS. I am curious just how many of the fabled $20,000 speakers were viewed as inferior by their owners when they first heard the VMPS line.  In my case, I have a pair of Spica Angelus speakers which I paid $750 for as demos, (I think they retailed for $1250) and I am pulling the trigger this week on the RM40s.

Hi,

My Synthesis LM-300 speakers retailed for around $3,000 circa 1988. I just replaced them with VMPS RM40s, arriving tomorrow. The most expensive speaker I've owned was the IMF Electronics SACM (Special Application Control Monitor) which retailed for around $4,000 circa 1983-1984.

Apogee Divas, DAX3, Muse18 subs were the better part of $20k retail, but all purchased used at significant savings.  Great system, and I actually made money when I sold it !

Zoe,

The speakers in my previous 2-channel system were Thiel CS-3.5.  They cost about $2,400 new back in 1989.

As I've stated many times on this board (and Harmonic Discord), my budget for speakers this time around was ~ $15,000.  I spent almost a year listening to other speakers, and my "winner" was Gershman Acoustics Opera Sauvage.

However, while awaiting for our house to be completed, I "discovered" VMPS.  During the initial conversation I had with Brian (Feb 2002), I queried him on his speakers in the before-mentioned price range.  By the end of the conversation, Brian had talked me out of his mega-buck speakers, and felt I should consider RM40s instead.  It still impresses me he cared more about finding the "best" speaker for my situation than for hooking a bigger sale.

Note I will not state on this (or any board) that my RM40s "destroy" all the speakers I auditioned during 2001.  It's just not true.  But I would challenge any audiophile to listen to RM40s along with this group of speakers (from $10,00 - $20,000), and be able to choose the "budget pretender".  In my opinion, RM40s can hold their head up high in this rarefied company.  And my pocketing $8,000 can never be a bad thing.

Price wise, I am actually spending a little bit more...

Out go the Silverline Sonata II's ($6500) and in come the RM 40's ($7200).

Sound wise, I feel like I am making a big jump...

How'd you end up paying 7200 for RM 40's Zybar? Just curious as the base price is only 4600. Thanks

4600 (base) + 1200 (TRT) + 600 (finish) + 400 (tweeter) + 400 (analysis plus wiring) = 7200

Adds up in a hurry...

Felt like I was buying a BMW

I think my VMPS FF1 SRE Actives were $7000 MSRP, the RM40 TRTs are  hugely better OVERALL.

zybar: thanks for the breakdown. Must be a nice finish for an extra 600.  I've heard this combination and it is stunning.

Previous speakers were Legacy Focus.  Had just under $4,000 in them.  Current system is an E-Speakers.com DIY pair.  With sub, around $3800.
