We were going to assemble these for the bass end of our upcoming biamped speakers but need some money for my first vacation in a million years.....maybe 2 million......so you get an amazing pair of mono blocks for the money. We have a 30 watt dual mono stereo amp here that has the exact same circuitry and is our reference amplifier. This amp sounds better than any of the modded switching amps we have sold including: Ice, Tripath, Nuforce and UCD. They are simply another league more open, natural and dimentional. These class A/B amps have no parts on the output (no inductors, caps, resistors, relays, etc.)....the mosfets are simply wired directly to the outside of the amp and wrapped around the binding posts for seriously transparent sound. The amps are DC coupled but do have a cap in the feedback (nude Blackgate bypassed by Wima film cap). When I get back from vacation (early March) I will be working on a circuit board for this design so I can sell them but this pair of mono blocks will be completely hand wired. The power supply will have two sets of diodes and caps (one set for the front end and one set for the output stage). This eliminates any intermodulation between the voltage stages and the high current output stage.
This amp is based on the new National Semi driver chip. So, you might call this amp a hybrid chip amp. The chip is the front end and the output stage is a push pull mosfet super simple stage. This circuit completely stomps all other kinds of all in one chip amps. The all in one chip amps have several problems: First. their output stage is biased at something like 10ma (way dry sound)......no one would ever bias an output stage that low......I use 250ma for my output stage. Second, the all in one chippers have built in protection circuits that screw up the sound. Third, the all in ones do not have a way to power the voltage and current stages separately so they don't sound as clean for this reason too. And lastly, the all in ones are really power and current limited. Also these new National parts are designed from the get go to be lower distortion "high end" parts. This "hybrid chip amp" can run up to 100 volt rails for 300 or more watts a channel and even be bridged for 1200 or more watts.....the sky is the limit. This pair of mono blocks has one pair of 15 amps mosfets that can easily do 175 watts into 8 ohms.
The chassis are 16 inches wide, 12 inches deep and 5 inches tall....very plain...very black and maybe even a few scratches. They will weigh something like 25lbs. each: 10lbs. for the 500 watt Plitron tranny ($130 each my cost) in each one. They will look much like the amps on my website but have plain unmarked faceplates. All parts will be super including soft recovery diodes, Dale RN55 resistors, blackgates, Wimas, custom litz output wires, PCOCC wiring, etc. Input jacks will be OFC and the outputs will be my binding post bypass system (see pictures on website). The on/off switch will be a circuit breaker.
These amps are sonically better than any amps I have sold and are seriously open sounding. We will be building these for delivery by late March, but need money now so the first $1200 (more if you want nude Vishays in them!) gets them. Optional built in attenuators are possible too....my 30 watters have built in attenuators....way cool! 80% of the parts are here including the trannies, chassis, heat sinks, input devices, output devices, diodes, etc. so I can work these up very fast!
