If any of you have a pair of unused 5" to 8" woofers that are setting gathering dust, I am looking fora donation of three more sets for student projects for this year.  I have most of the tweeters and crossover components needed thanks to the generous donations of the members of the AC Forum. 

To give you a short history, we are sponsoring a high school speaker building competition in local physics classes.  The drivers are given to students for them to design their crossover and overall concept.  We are tax exempt. Seems to me I volunteered to do this a year or 2 ago but no one responded.  I have 3 pairs of Sonic Craft 6-1/2" B/MR* drivers I'll donate.

* That's bass/midrange.  Oh how I hate the term 'midwoofer' or midbass/mid-bass.  'That's just one octave' is my 1st reaction.

Wow!! What can I say?  That is a very generous offer.  I'll be checking with a couple of schools next week and get back to you.  If we add another school, we will definitely need more woofers.

We had another high school sign up today.    We are going to have students build systems as extra credit projects--- estimation 8-10 speaker systems.  Next year they are interested in including all their physics students-- approx. 170 students!! .   At 4 students per group, it is still over 40 speaker systems.  I am going to have to figure out how we will measure that many projects!!

Would you be interested in any 3" FR drivers? I know it's not as challenging as designing an actual crossover, but I thought I may as well ask...

Actually, I was talking to one of the teachers yesterday about designing a speaker as a classroom activity- something that could be done quickly in class in about 2 hours.  Small full range would be perfect for that... especially to see the effects of OB vs. porting vs. sealed, recess mounting, or maybe even transmission line.  The teacher could precut the boxes, the students could assemble, line the cabinets, solder, and test. 

But aren't you on the other side of the world from Texas?  I shudder to think what shipping would run.

However, if we start trying to sponsor hundreds of speaker projects, the scope of the program may have to be rethought.  The old saying is, "Be careful what you ask for, you might get it."

Are they sheilded?

They are Neo magnets which I think makes them effectively shielded. Here's what I found -

1. 2 pairs of these (one pair used)
2. A pair of these
3. A pair of these

The last two I thought might be an interesting project as they would be pretty non-critical with respect to freq and slope. Anyway let me know if they would be useful. The Qts on these small drivers is on the high side so while you can port them they don't really work with textbook alignments.

I don't see that we would be able to do much with the little 1" Aurasounds.  Their low sensitivities preclude using them for mids in a 3 way, but the others will be handy.
