Anybody used 2x4 ceiling panels?
« on: 16 Jan 2009, 02:05 am »
Hi, I've been reading for a while and have appreciated all the knowledge and info that everyone shares so freely.  I have come to the conclusion that I can't afford any professional room treatments right now and even if I could my wife would not find anything acceptable that interferes with her country decor.  So I'm thinking cheap and portable, something I can drag out for an afternoon or evening and then put back and store away.  Acoustic celing panels come in 2' x 4' packs of 10 for about $40.  Has anyone tried placing these around the room in pairs as V's against the wall to create at least some diffusion?  Thanks to all of you.  David in Northbrook, IL.

I'm glad you asked about these- I was working with some just today & thinking they must be about the same as rockwool or compressed fiberglass..

Maybe you could find an old pair of Magnepan Tympanis that you could unfold behind your main speakers.  They look like ceiling panels, right?
You might even hook some wires up to them, just in case.  That's what I'd love to do!   :D

Here's another home brew option

These guys are "official" and seem pretty affordable ATS Acoustics

Thanks dwarfed centipede, they're fixed now.
Other boards I'm on require the quotes.

Well I updated it again, but now it links to Owens Corning's site.

It was a search for "owens corning foam"   at Home Depot

I did something similar to what you're thinking about. I bought some Auralex panels at a local Guitar Center and instead of gluing the foam panels to the wall I glued them to ceiling tiles purchased at Lowes. I use them in a small dedicated room so the wife doesn't care what they look like but if I wanted to they could be removed easily. You can see them if you click on my system pics at the bottom of my post.

Thanks Barry_NJ for the tip on ATS.  That looks like a solution that's almost as cheap and certainly way better acoustically. David
