Philips DSR708 for Directv and Tivo

Does anyone know if these type of dvr's or ones for dish network or any other specifically designated dvr can be used without using their service?  Just use it to pick up the cable signal and record?  Does any of these have a QAM tuner and HDMI out?  I know.....really hoping there would be something that easy to record HD channels... :(

You could always make a HTPC.  I got a high def tv tuner for my computer for around $60.  If you get a higher end card, they can even record your favorite shows like a tivo.  But you need at least 1TB  of hard drive space, as the HD shows take up a lot of space.
