Best way to isolate my speaker from the floor???
« on: 13 Jan 2009, 07:37 pm »
I have a pair of Zu definitions that are sitting on a carpeted concrete floor and wondering good suggestions on isolating the speakers from the floor. I have seen the equarack mounts and the perceived value seems a little low at almost $1000. Am I wrong? Are there other options that people have had success with??? Thank you!

What specifically are you trying to accomplish?  Do you want to hold the speaker more still?  Trying to stop bass from being transmitted through the floor into other areas?

Brian,
Thanks for the response. I am trying to achieve 3 things:
1. Reduce vibration energy transmitted from 2 large HVAC units in the room next door.
2. Reduce vibrations from the cabinet to my source and amp.
3. Reduce cabinet vibration

OK.

Reducing transmission through HVAC isn't going to happen via speaker isolation - sorry.

If you're speaking of reducing vibrations in the speaker cabs themselves, that isn't going to happen either other than clamping them somehow to damp them - or potentially treating the inner walls of the cabinets.

To decouple from the floor, I'll give a shameless plug to our stand.  It's designed specifically for that with a bass absorber built in.  Then spike the speaker to that for rigidity.

Hello Dave (long time no see ),

Not sure how well these would do for your mains, but under my subs I use a pair of large "Unhappy Balls", carefully sliced in half for four feet. They are made of norbornene, an excellent anti-vibration material. Also used in heavy-duty applications such as ...

And you can get them here http://scientificsonline.com/product.asp?pn=3039129&bhcd2=1231881376

They seem to work well isolating my 12" downward firing subs.

Good luck with your search and please tell us what ends up working for you.

What you are really wanting to do is not to isolate them from the floor or de-couple them from the floor. The floor isn't the problem. It's the carpet, and your biggest vibrational issue is more likely to be from the speaker moving around on the carpet. The carpet is already isolating the speakers from the floor. Coupling the speaker to the floor via a good set of spikes will do wonders for you.
