Hello Bally,
There are lots of great places to stay in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, they can be INCREDIBLY expensive during CES. A room that runs $69 today will run you $269 during CES. Whatever you do, don't just show up and expect to get a good price ( they really sock it to you). Something like Orbitz or Hotels.com are the only way to go.
I have been going to Las Vegas a couple of times a year for about the last 12 years or so and have stayed at hotels ranging from the $29 Travellodge located next to the MGM all the way up to the $$$ Ballagio (when my former company was paying, of course

).
If you are primarily interested in music, then I suggest the San Remo or Tropicana if you are on a budget. If you want something a little nicer and don't mind spending a little more money, then the MGM, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, or New York-New York are all reasonably nice. From any of these hotels you can easily walk to the San Remo (the location of T.H.E. SHOW [i.e. The Home Entertainment expo]) and then take the free shuttle to Alexis Park where the CES High-end Audio is located.
If you have lots of money to burn, then the Paris, Ballagio, or better yet, the Venetian are all 5 star properties.
As for me, I am in severe "cost saving" mode this year so decided to stay at one of the older downtown hotels. I can still take the free shuttle to CES in the mornings and just take a cab back at night. They are not nearly as nice as some of the Strip hotels (some are pretty scarry actually) but you probably won't be spending much of your time in the hotel anyway.
See you there.
Julian
