Onkyo A-9555 too much for Omega Super 6 XRS?
« on: 11 Jan 2009, 07:24 pm »
Hi,

I'm a hifi newbie, and I'm trying to upgrade as I go.  I'm wondering if the 85 W/Ch of the Onkyo A-9555 will overpower sensitive speakers such as the Omega Super 6 w/ the alnico driver.  I would like to upgrade the amp to a low power tube set up in the future, which is why I am interested in the Omegas.  But I will probably be stuck with the Onkyo for a while.  My thought is to invest as much as I can in speakers and upgrade everything else as I go...

Any thoughts?  I listen to mostly rock, acoustic rock, power pop, etc. in my 20x30 converted basement.  85 watts/channel is definitely WAY more power than I need.

Welcome,
I'm far from an expert myself but for what its worth i use a similar set-up to the one you are describing and am very pleased with the results. I currently use the Onkyo A-9555 in my 2 channel home theater set-up with a pair of fostex based (fe-103) tekton design single driver speakers (93db if i remember correctly). Obviously not a bass heavy rig but sounds very natural, not harsh at all. The motor driven volume pot on the Onkyo is a thing of beauty and will give you plenty of room to work with. Also of note for a solid state amp the A-9555 has a low damping factor (25ish) which works quite well with the higher efficiency single driver designs. Keeps them from sounding so "thin" from my experience. I almost forgot that it has defeatable bass/treble controls as well. If you can find one used its really quite a bargain. For some perspective my other amps are an Almarro a318a, a gainclone, F5, Trends and a few others that I've since sold. The Onkyo does quite well especially considering its features.

Regards, Daniel.

Thanks for the feedback, Daniel!   :thumb: I have an Onkyo stereo receiver I picked up at Circuit City a few years back that sounds great, considering I paid $250 for it, so it's a name I know and trust.

I wouldn't mind if anyone else wanted to offer any additional feedback. :o

Hi I-T-S,

Welcome to the forum :D.

In a word, yes, you will be O.K. with your Onkyo. A while back Louis mentioned to me about this poor guy who blew up his tube amp. He was using a Yamaha receiver on his Super 6 Alnico Monitors during the repair, and was very satisfied with the sound quality. With 85 watts you will have plenty of dynamic head room. You probably won't need more than 5 watts to blow you out of the room .

Onkyo does make some very good sounding SS gear so, crank'em  up and go for a ride :thumb:.

Enjoy,

Chris
