Can this be a host for Slimserver for SB3?
« on: 11 Jan 2009, 01:35 pm »
Just surfing eBay, and noticed this thing, not sure what it is.  I can tell that it is a HD container, and it appears to have strong connectivity options, but what is less clear, is whether or not you could load it with an HD full of flac, and connect it via RF45 and be done?

I assume that drive would have to have slimserver loaded on it, but am unsure if it would need to have an OS onboard.  And if it did, is that all it would take?

Could Linux be used instead of a windows OS?

This device has a built-in OS on a chip that runs the interface.  It cannot be a server for a SqueezeBox.  It is designed to be directly connected to your TV/stereo and directly controlled via the remote.  You could stick a harddrive in it, copy your music to the HD, hook it to your stereo/TV and then play the music, but who knows what the output quality will be like.

I shouldn't be 100% absolute - it's possible that someone could hack it to install the SB server software, but it wouldn't be a simple task.

OK, so better off with a LINUX build on a small form PC then I assume.  The h/w appears to be affordable, and I know guys from school (though 10-15 years ago now) who are LINUX friendly.

Thanks,
