Acoustic move across the recording room...
« on: 10 Jan 2009, 10:07 pm »

...seems to become possible also by loudspeaker reproduction:

"Our acoustic perception is mainly determined by the spatial distribution of the direct wave and its first reflections in the recording room. All conventional loudspeaker reproduction procedures reduce that spatial sound field structure to a few channels, inevitably causing significant loss of spatial information. The animation shows a different procedure, comparably the optically holography principle. A loudspeaker screen in front of the listener synthesizes the wave fronts from the pure audio signal and the room properties. But in difference to the common known wave field synthesis approach the playback room acoustic doesn't bear down, but included in the synthesis. Dependent of the recording and playback- room geometry the wave fronts become radiate in such manner, that arrive by the listener in the same behaviour as on the ears of a virtual listener in the recording room. That position can change during the playback yet, by its remote the listener can move across the virtual recording room! The way becomes described on" ... www.holophony.net

Very interesting. I have thought about this idea too, though not as sophisticated (nor as well conceived) as yours. I am in NC (where the prototype is being developed) and would love to hear a demonstration when it's ready.
Thanks!

Hi Rich, if the time is coming for a new idea often more as one people have the same thoughts. But the industry hasn’t the courage to leave the obsolete ways mostly.

You are from the same city as our N.C. member; it would be a pleasure for him to meet, as far as I see. Give me your mail address as a PM, I make a contact. Possibly you can give some helpfully advices, Mike isn’t an acoustician, but a programmer.

p.s. What makes a sovjet pjatnazatch Kopeek Stamp with the Prokovjev picture in N.C.?
