Stratos Mono Extreme SE Input Impedance?
« on: 10 Jan 2009, 03:17 pm »
I looked through the first 10 pages or so and couldn't find an exact number.

I want to purchase a Response Audio Musica Bella Perfetto preamplifier.

Its output impedance is 2.5K.

Klaus lists >10K for input, but what is the exact number?

I really love my Stratos Mono Extreme SEs and would hate to have to look at something else. Can these two components work together?

It is very likely the 10K that Klaus lists. My old Mono Extreme's were 18K but they were one of the very first pairs and having talked to Klaus I know they have changed significantly since then. If the Zout of the preamp is 2.5K that is not going to be a very good match up with the Odyssey. Usually at 1:10 or greater impedance ratio is desired, so an optimal situation for the Odyssey is a pre with a Zout of 1K or less.

I had a conversation exactly with regards to the input impedance of the stratos amps.

The answer from Klaus was 10-12 Kohms for the input impedance.
I needed this exact info because I use a digital crossover with a balanced output and
I purchased some attenuator blocks to sit between the crossover and the amps to
maximize resolution in the crossover and to lower the s/n of the crossover's output
while maintaining a low level signal to the amps for what is an extremely efficient speaker setup.

I customized the attenuator blocks so the unused negative terminal on the balanced out of the
crossover fed a....12k resistor.

Silly question...but
Would a Candela tube pre be a good match for Odyssey mono's with a 10 -12k ohm input inpedance?

I can't remember the exact figure, but I think AlexG said the Candela has a fairly low output impedance, certainly enough to be greater than 10:1 ratio.  I'm using it with my SE's and it sounds great.

I can tell you this... They are 10 k input for sure... and the Candela is 2 k output!!! They are technically not a good match, this has come up before on this forum if you search for it.. But somehow most seem to find this combo to work....My odysseys NEVER worked well in any model modification with most tube pres as mine were all between about 1200 ohm and 1500 ohm so 1.2 k to 1.5 k... In the end I had fuller sound and better dynamics with a much lower output preamp which was at 220 ohm and it was a mcintosh solid state...

My suggestion for tube pres on these amps is to look at some of the BAT models which are down around 500 to 600 output impedance, and of course Conrad Johnson Pre's which make some as low as 50 ohm!! I never owned the candela.

Beyond that not slamming the amps, they are pretty good for the money, my last configuration I owned was the Mono extreme S.E. types... But between speaker and tube pre matching ended up on the for sale block.

Then again people running speakers that are not as picky and lower efficiency with these amps probably sound pretty full range and dynamic with higher impedance output preamps, but they fell flat with mine until getting into some really low output pre's... Never know they can work well or not I guess.
